Spelling rule to practise at home
Year 5, Unit 6: Words ending in -ent
Even though some words end in -ent the letters are crushed so they sound like unt when you say
them. It can be tricky to know whether to write -ent or -ant.
Use these tips to help you.
Tip 1: It is always safe to write -ent after soft c or soft g:
magnificent intelligent
Tip 2: It is almost always safe to write -ent after qu, ti or ci:
frequent patient ancient
Tips are useful but can be hard to remember, too. In the end, words ending in -ent are a bit like
song lyrics the best way to learn them is to read them and practise writing them lots of times!
You can create adverbs, too, by adding the suffix -ly to some of the adjectives ending in -ent.
root word (adjective)
innocent
decent
patient
obedient
intelligent
magnificent
confident
root word + suffix (adverb)

No changes had to be made to the root word before adding -ly.
The above is the spelling rule which we are learning next week. Practise applying this and
find more words which use this rule.
