The Bush Theatre is looking for an experienced, enthusiastic, and highly organised Head of
Operations to be responsible for the smooth and efficient operational running of the Bush
Theatre, and to maximise income from the commercial activities of the Bush’s trading
subsidiary including bars, catering and events.

JOB DESCRIPTION

After nearly 40 years in residence over a pub on Shepherd’s Bush Green, the Bush Theatre
moved into the Old Library in Shepherd’s Bush in October 2011. Five years on, 2016 is another
pivotal moment in the Bush Theatre’s history. This year we have embarked on a £4.3m
redevelopment project to complete the transformation of the old library, making the building more
accessible, more sustainable and open to even more people.
Under the artistic leadership of Madani Younis, the Bush Theatre is committed to presenting a
diverse and innovative programme of new writing which speaks to and reflects contemporary
society in all its diversity.
In March 2017, the Bush Theatre will reopen to the public with an expanded artistic programme
which will incorporate a flexible 190 seat theatre and a new 70 seat performance space. In
addition, there will be revitalised front of house areas, including new bar and catering facilities, a
new external terrace area on the west side of the building and redesign of the overall space to
create even more areas available for commercial hire.
Purpose of the Job
To be responsible for the smooth and efficient operational running of the Bush Theatre, and to
maximise income from the commercial activities of the Bush’s trading subsidiary including bars,
catering and events.
Duties and Responsibilities
Operations
 To be responsible for the day to day management of the building including IT and
telephone systems, safety and security procedures, in consultation with the Production
Manager
 To oversee the Front of House operation, line managing the Visitor Services Manager
and ensuring that the Bush provides excellent customer care and high standards of
service to all visitors.
 To manage the day to day administration of the company including office systems,
internal communication, company information and overseeing the working environment,
delegating to the Theatre Administrator as appropriate.
 To oversee and co-ordinate the day to day running of the company including scheduling
and planning for the building and its spaces.
 To work in consultation with the Executive Director to ensure maximise the benefits and
efficiency of the redeveloped Bush Theatre building and in accordance with the agreed
Business Plan
 To act as a keyholder for the theatre.
Bars & Catering
 To be responsible for devising, implementing and reviewing a bars and catering operating
model that maximises the net contribution from theatre-attenders and non-theatre
attenders.
 To line manage the Bars and Catering Manager and ensure strong relationships with
suppliers to maximise profitability of the operation.
 To act as the Designated Premises Supervisor for the organisation and to ensure the
highest standards in hygiene and health and safety.
Events & Hires
 To oversee the events and hires business and to maximise revenue through exploiting
available space and generating new income streams, keeping in line with the Bush’s
wider strategic goals.
 To line manage the Events Manager to develop new business and increase overall
profitability.
 To ensure that events and hires business is considered in all organisational planning and
programming.
 To lead on major contracts for significant events and hires business and ensuring
adherence to legal and financial agreements.
HR and Personnel
 To manage the HR function for the Bush Theatre.
 To induct new staff members.
 To oversee the Bush Theatre’s performance management system.
 To oversee the Bush Theatre’s approach to professional development for staff,
maintaining records of staff training and working with line managers to identify suitable
training opportunities for staff.
 To ensure that the Bush Theatre is compliant with all appropriate statutory and Union
regulations.
Governance and Administration
 To oversee legal and statutory matters relating to the main company and its subsidiaries,
and provide support and advice for the Executive Director and Board on such matters.
 To be responsible for ensuring all premises, staff and productions are adequately insured.
 To manage board and subcommittee processes including the drafting of board papers as
required, including agendas; to attend and minute Board meetings, and maintain board
records.
 To attend and minute Finance and Audit Committee meetings.
 To support the Executive Director in preparing the Arts Council England NPO application.
 To liaise with Arts Council England and other public funders, preparing the NPO annual
submission and providing any other information as required.
 To oversee the management and development of the theatre’s archive.
Policies
 To manage, support, implement and abide by the theatre’s Health and Safety Policy;
ensuring that all members of the company are trained in and comply with emergency and
safety procedures.
 To actively monitor the Company’s Equalities Policy and Action Plan (diversity, access,
equal opportunities), ensuring all personnel are involved in its implementation.



To actively lead and monitor the Company’s Environmental Sustainability Policy and
Action Plan, ensuring all personnel are involved in its implementation and taking
responsibility for reporting and certification of the theatre’s environmental performance.
To ensure the highest standards of Child Protection and Safeguarding.
Ensuring the Bush’s policies are regularly updated, compliant, clearly communicated,
implemented, and fit for purpose.
Finance
 To manage administrative/operational budgets.
 To work closely with the Head of Finance and act as back up when required.
 To oversee the ongoing review of supply contracts ensuring both value for money and
ethical and environmental standards are achieved.
Company
 To work in support of the artistic policy of The Bush Theatre.
 To sit as part of the Heads of Department to ensure the interests of the Operations
department are met.
 To attend and chair weekly operations meetings.
 To attend regular Company and Bar and Events business meetings.
 Actively implement green policies and practices for all departments
 Adhere to, and actively contribute to, Bush Theatre policies, including Equalities
(diversity, access, equal opportunities), Environmental and Health & Safety.
 To maximise income and minimise expenditure wherever possible, without jeopardising
the quality of the work or the reputation of the Bush Theatre.
 To act always in the best interest of The Bush Theatre
 Any other duties as reasonably required.
Person Specification
Essential
 At least two years’ experience working in a Theatre or Arts venue.
 Knowledge of Health & Safety legislation
 Proven experience of HR management
 Proven experience as a line manager: motivating, set clear objectives, providing
feedback, use of performance management processes
 Proven track record of managing, motivating and developing a wide range of staff
 Experience of managing a bar/catering operation to generate substantial revenue
 Experience of building management
 Experience of preparing and negotiating contracts
 Experience of procurement and resource management
 Numerate and financially aware, with experience of budget management
 Absolute attention to detail
 A collaborative and ‘team player’ approach to work
 Excellent interpersonal skills and good written and verbal communication skills
 Excellent organisational and time management skills and the ability to manage a busy
workload, prioritise and work to deadline
 Commitment to best practice
 Ability to work with a calm manner under pressure
 Excellent customer service skills, including ability to communicate with customers
efficiently in a courteous, professional manner under pressure



A high level of computer literacy, in particular with relation to Microsoft Office applications
and email

Desirable
 Experience of Theatrical Management Association contracts
 Knowledge of UK Sponsorship Management System (for overseas artists)

Terms and Conditions
Hours:
40 Hours per week across at least five days
Salary :
£30k-35k depending on experience.
Holidays:
22 days per annum plus Bank Holidays
Rising to 23 days after two years’ service
Rising to 24 days after four years’ service
