America Builds An Empire
New Imperialism
Beginning in the 1880s the British, French, Belgians,
Italians, Dutch, Spanish and Germans began to take
on new colonies for new markets and raw materials.
Important
Western Imperialism was stimulated by:
• Quest for new markets
• Nationalistic pride and rivalries between
powers
• The desire to spread Christianity
• An ongoing quest for raw materials
American Imperialism
• Sen. Albert J. Beveride
• Sen. Henry Cabot Lodge
• Theodore Roosevelt
• Alfred Thayer Mahan
And many others were all
in favor of the Unites
States expanding its
territory
Captain Mahan
• Mahan wrote published a book
entitled The Influence of Sea
power upon History, 16601783
• He argued that sea power was
essential to national greatness
• He believed the U.S. needed a
powerful navy, foreign
commerce, colonies , naval
bases, and an isthmian canal to
connect the Caribbean to the
Pacific and spread Western
civilization in the Pacific.
Religion and Imperialism
• Imperialism was not just economic it also had
racist and religious overtones as well
• Many in the United States including President
McKinley used Social Darwinism to justify the
economic exploitation of territorial conquest.
• The idea of the fittest will survive and the white
(Anglo-Saxon) protestants were the fittest
• There was a strong anti-Catholic sentiment during
this era

Seward in 1867 bought
Alaska for 7.2 million from
Russia
• At the time the United
States was hoping that
British Columbians would
join the U.S.
• At the time many Americans
thought Folly was wrong to
buy the icebox however
Alaska would prove a good
investment.
