Spelling Activities Students, here are just a few ways that you can practice your spelling words each week! Parents, please help your child choose an activity that best suits his/her learning style, or feel free to come up with your own activity! *Visual learners learn best through seeing, whether they are looking at words or pictures. *Auditory learners learn best by hearing the information. *Tactile/kinesthetic learners must touch, manipulate, and do, in order to learn. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- VISUAL ACTIVITIES Story, Story - Write a story using all of your spelling words. Sentence, Please - Write a sentence for each spelling word. Practice Test - Take a practice test (this is especially good on Thursday nights). Stair steps - Write words as if they are stairs, adding one letter each time. ABC Order- Write your words in alphabetical order. Re-write them in reverse alphabetical order. Rainbow Words - Write a spelling word with your pencil. Now trace around the outside with a crayon without touching the letters. Pick two other crayons to continue tracing outward! Picture Words – Draw a picture and write your words in the picture. Words-in-Words – Write your word and then write 2 new words made from each original word. 30 Second Words – Write a TV commercial using all of your words. Include an illustration. AUDITORY ACTIVITIES Sound Words – Record yourself saying the words and then spelling them. Then watch the video, checking to see that you spelled all the words correctly. Repeat and Exaggerate - Use verbal repetition to say the word aloud, spell, and repeat. Exaggerate and enunciate letters and patterns to learn words. Music – Use music or melodies to remember the spellings. Sing Them Loud, Sing Them Soft - Have your Mom or Dad sing the letters of a spelling word to you in a loud voice. You echo the spelling and then sing it again softly. Now sing together! Cheerleader – Pretend you are a cheerleader and call out your words! Alternate yelling and whispering them. Also try clapping for each letter. TACTILE/KINESTHETIC ACTIVITIES Painting - Paint words on big paper hung on an easel or wall. Or use paintbrushes and water to “paint” the sidewalk with spelling words! Whiteboard/Chalkboard - Use a whiteboard or chalkboard to practice. Try playing Hangman! Finger Tracing - Use your finger to spell out each of your words one letter at a time on your Mom or Dad’s back. Then it’s YOUR turn to feel and spell. Scrabble/Bananagrams - Use Scrabble or Bananagrams tiles to spell your words. Delicious Words – Write your words in whipped cream, peanut butter, or anything you can eat! Make sure you get permission from a parent first! 3D Words – Write your words by arranging alphabet pasta, Play Do, or letter magnets. Magazine Words – Use a magazine and find your words. Cut them out and glue them on paper. Etch-A-Word – Use an Etch-A-Sketch to write your words. Spelling Baseball – Set up four chairs to be the bases. Pitcher selects a word. If batter can spell it correctly, he moves forward one base. If batter can’t spell word, he remains where he is. COMBINATION ACTIVITIES Typing – (Visual, Tactile) Type your spelling words three times each. Play with different colors and fonts. Online Games – (Visual, Tactile, Auditory) Go to http://www.spellingcity.com/, http://www.aaaspell.com/, http://www.spellingtime.com/ or http://www.kidsspell.com/index.php Memory Game – (Visual, Tactile) Make pairs of spelling word cards. Flip them over and try to match the pairs! Silly String – (Visual, Tactile, Auditory) With a long length of string, “write” words in cursive, using the string to shape the letters. Say the letters as you form them.
