What is nonverbal communication?
1. Those messages expressed by other than linguistic means
2. Why is it important?
A. Scholars estimate that 60-70% of our communication is nonverbal
II. Primarily used for relational functions:
1. Communicates our identity
2. Communicates our relationship
3. Communicates our emotions

Oculesics:
1. Eye contact and Eye behavior.
A. Indicator of trust or interest.
B. Civil inattention

Kinesics: Body movement
A. Facial expression—
B. Six basic emotions that are common cross-culturally and are easily
distinguished. These are surprise, fear, anger, disgust, happiness and
sadness.

3. Speaking rate: faster speakers perceived as more intelligent, competent.
