Food Politics in the European Union Food Politics in the European Union is a two week summer course where you study the politics and policies of food issues in Europe. The course provides an overview of the key themes that drive the food politics agenda such as environmental pollution, overfishing, animal welfare, health and obesity, food security and food safety. It examines EU policies and the way these are shaped by national and international levels of government. The course will provide participants with: 1. A comprehensive understanding of the major issues facing consumption and production of food in the Western world by looking at human and ecological welfare and the roles of different levels of government and governance. 2. An overview of key EU policies (such as the Common Agricultural Policy, the Common Fisheries Policy, food safety and health regulations, food security) and the role of EU institutions (Council, Commission, European Parliament). 3. An understanding of the roles of citizens, NGO’s and businesses in influencing and implementing policies. The course is taught by several specialists – both academics and professionals. Next to the lectures, there will be two excursions. The first excursion brings us to Brussels where we meet different policymakers to study a specific food dossier (such as GMOs or rules on food labels). The second to organic, conventional, and urban farms as well as a local food bank, to examine the impact of food policies in practice.
