Jim Henson’s The Storyteller: Greek Myths (1990) United States/UK – HBO
A storyteller in a labyrinth tells his dog the stories of Perseus and Medusa, Icarus
and Daedalus, Theseus and the Minotaur, and Orpheus and Euridyce.
Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (1995-1999) New Zealand/United States
Very loosely based on the tales of the classical Greek culture hero Heracles; set
in a fantasy version of ancient Greece, but not precisely located in historical time.
Typically involved Hercules and Iolaus saving rustic villagers from monsters, evil
warlords or the often-selfish whims of the gods.
Xena: Warrior Princess (1995-2001) New Zealand/United States
Spin-off of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Set primarily in a mythological
fantasy version of ancient Greece but modified some known places and events
(battles, trading routes, towns, etc) to generate an attractive fictional world. As
the show progressed, events began taking place through more modern times and
mythology of the show shifted from Olympian Gods to include Judeo-Christian
elements.
The Odyssey (1997) United States – NBC (mini-series)
Mini-series based on the ancient Greek epic poem, The Odyssey.
Hercules: The Animated Series (1998-1999) United States – ABC/Disney Jr.
Follows teenage Hercules training as a hero as well as trying to adjust to life. He
battles his evil uncle Hades with his friends Icarus and Cassandra and his
teacher Philoctetes.
Young Hercules (1998-1999) New Zealand/United States – Fox Kids Network
Follows Hercules as he attends Chiron’s Academy to train in the arts of the
warrior under the wise headmaster Chiron the Centaur.
Cupid (1998-1999) United States – ABC
Follows a Chicago psychologist who is given charge of a man named Trevor
Hale who believes he is Cupid and that he was sent down from Mt. Olympus by
Zeus to connect 100 couples without his powers as a punishment for his
arrogance.
Mythic Warriors: Guardians of the Legend (1998-2000) Canada
An animated television series that featured retellings of popular Greek myths
(altered for younger audiences).
Class of the Titans (2005-2008) Canada
Seven teenage descendants of figures of Greek mythology are assembled to
battle the schemes of the villainous god, Cronus. (Animated)
Valentine (2008-2009) United States – The CW
Follows the Valentine family, a group of gods living amongst humans. They must
keep their true identities secret as they do whatever it takes to bring soulmates
together. With help from the fates and the Oracle of Delphi, it is up to the gods
and Kate to help bring love back into people’s lives.
Clash of the Gods (2009) United States – History Channel
A mythological television series that covers the stories of many of the ancient
Greek and Norse Gods. Not scripted or serialized.
Cupid (2009-2010) United States – ABC
A revival of the 1998 series, changing the setting from Chicago to New York City
The Almighty Johnsons (2011-present) New Zealand
Follows a student, Axl, who discovers his family members are reincarnated
Norse gods. However, they don’t have full control of their powers and it is up to
Axl (the reincarnation of Odin) to restore them and ensure the family’s survival by
finding the reincarnation of Odin’s wife, Frigg.
American Gods (in production) United States – HBO
Adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s novel “American Gods” that will portray a group of
ancient Gods trying to compete with the secular values of modern-day America.
