A long axis section through the heart profiles the cardiac septum to show the thin valve of the oval foramen (open arrow) on the left atrial side and the
muscular rim on the right atrial side. The cut reveals the infolding of the right atrial wall at the superior rim that is filled with epicardial fat (asterisk) to form
the interatrial groove. At the ventricular septum, the leaflets of the tricuspid and mitral valves are hinged at different levels (small arrows) producing offset
between the right and left atrioventricular junctions. Thus, the vestibule of the right atrium overlies the ventricular septum. Abbreviations as before.
