Station #1 Virtual Aortic Aneurysm http://www.edheads.org/activities/aortic/swf/index.htm 1. The aortic artery is part of what body system? What happens in this system? (pg. 198-207) It is part of the circulatory system. The circulatory system delivers materials throughout the body such as chemical messengers, oxygen and glucose from the digestive system to the body cells. 2. What is vascular surgery? Vascular surgery is when diseases of the vascular system, or arteries and veins, are managed by medical therapy, minimally-invasive catheter procedures, and surgical reconstruction. 3. What is an aneurysm? An aneurysm is the enlargement of an artery that is caused by the weakening of the arterial wall. 4. What is a cardiologist? A cardiologist is a doctor that has specialized in the cardiovascular system. These doctors treat the heart, veins, arteries and other parts of the cardiovascular system. Station #2 1. Cut out the parts of the skeleton. 2. Use the information from the book, page 164, to label the different bones. 3. Color the bones according to the key below. 4. Glue the bones together to form a complete skeleton. Bones Skull Rib Cage Arm bones The Hands and Feet The Pelvis Leg Bones Color Purple Red Blue Yellow Green Orange Station #3 Write a paragraph using the information from pages 162-169, about the role of the skeleton in the body, joints, and bone characteristics. The paragraph needs to have at least 7 sentences. In each sentence replace 1 or 2 key words with a blank line for a total of 10 blanks. Create a word box at the end of the paragraph that has 15 words, where 10 of which are used to fill in the blanks. DO NOT COPY SENTENCES OUT OF THE BOOK. WRITE YOUR OWN SENTENCES USING THE INFORMATION FROM THE BOOK. The skeleton gives the body structure and support. It facilitates movement, protect organs, stores minerals inside the bones, and it is where blood cells are produced. Joints are vital in movement of the bones. Bones can move in different ways because of joints. There are two types of joints; the movable joints are the ball-and-socket joint (shoulder), pivot joint (neck), hinge joint (elbow) and gliding joint (ankle). Bones are strong structures that are constantly growing and repairing themselves. Since bone is living it needs to be innervated and vascularized. Therefore, there are small canals in the compact bone that have blood vessels and nerves which supply the cells. In your own words, describe the 4 functions of the circulatory system. a. Delivers Material: blood transports chemical messengers, oxygen from your lungs. And glucose to your body cells b. Removes Wastes: Blood takes away wastes from body cells. For example, blood transports carbon dioxide from body cells to your lungs, where it is exhaled. c. Regulates Body Temperature: Changes in the amount of blood flow in the skin help carry heat away or prevent heat loss d. Fights Disease: Blood cells contain cells that attack disease-causing microorganisms. 2. What is the function of a heart? The heart is a muscle that pumps blood throughout the body through blood vessels such as veins and arteries. 3. Describe the function of arteries and veins. What is their main difference? The arteries carry blood away from the heart. Veins carry blood back to the heart. The main difference between arteries is arteries have oxygenated blood while veins have deoxygenated blood. 4. Draw the circulatory system on page 201; Label and color. Station #5 Page 170-175 1. Involuntary muscles: Involuntary muscles are muscles that are not under conscious control. The muscles in the digestive system and the muscles involved in breathing are examples. 2. Voluntary muscles: Voluntary muscles are muscles that are under someone’s conscious control. Examples of this are when a person walks, writings, or talks. 3. Describe the 3 types of muscles and their functions in the body. a. Skeletal muscles: banned or striated. These muscles are considered voluntary muscles because humans have conscious control over their skeletal muscles. They allow the body to react quickly and to move. Example: triceps or hamstrings b. Smooth Muscle: not banned or striated. Smooth muscles are involuntary muscles. The internal organs such as the stomach consist of smooth muscle. c. Cardiac Muscle: banned or striated. Cardiac muscle is found only in the heart and is involuntary.
