Information about Merak 
Merak’s name means flank of the Great
Bear
 This star is located in the bottom right
corner of the Big Dipper constellation
 It is a White Main Sequence star and it’s
sixty-two light years away!

THE HISTORY ABOUT MERAK
Another name for Merak is Tien Seunen. This name actually came
from the Chinese.
 To the Greeks, this star was named Helike, one of their names to the
whole constellation, Ursa Major.
 According to Burnham, Merak is part of a star cluster including at
least 16 other stars from the Ursa Major area of the sky.

 Merak
is located in the bottom right hand
corner of the Big Dipper.
 You can find this star all year round in the Northern
Hemisphere.
 And the star is in the constellation Ursa Major.

Although it doesn’t seem like it, Merak is fifty
times brighter than our sun!!! =D
Magnitude
 There’s two types of magnitude; absolute and
apparent.
 For Merak, it’s absolute magnitude is 0.41
 And for the apparent magnitude it is 2.34
Temperature
 Merak’s surface temperature is about nine thousand
Kelvin


The constellation Ursa Major contains the star
Merak and many more.
These stars include: Alkaid, Mizar, Alioth,
Megrez, Dubhe, and Phecda.

Merak may seem like just another star in the
sky, but a little bit of research can get you A


