Merak Loren Gallimore Information about Merak Merak’s name means flank of the Great Bear This star is located in the bottom right corner of the Big Dipper constellation It is a White Main Sequence star and it’s sixty-two light years away! THE HISTORY ABOUT MERAK Another name for Merak is Tien Seunen. This name actually came from the Chinese. To the Greeks, this star was named Helike, one of their names to the whole constellation, Ursa Major. According to Burnham, Merak is part of a star cluster including at least 16 other stars from the Ursa Major area of the sky. (http://domeofthesky.com/clicks/merak.html) Merak is located in the bottom right hand corner of the Big Dipper. You can find this star all year round in the Northern Hemisphere. And the star is in the constellation Ursa Major. Although it doesn’t seem like it, Merak is fifty times brighter than our sun!!! =D Magnitude There’s two types of magnitude; absolute and apparent. For Merak, it’s absolute magnitude is 0.41 And for the apparent magnitude it is 2.34 Temperature Merak’s surface temperature is about nine thousand Kelvin The constellation Ursa Major contains the star Merak and many more. These stars include: Alkaid, Mizar, Alioth, Megrez, Dubhe, and Phecda. Merak may seem like just another star in the sky, but a little bit of research can get you A LOT of information.
