Aim: How can we explore a Greek creation myth? DO NOW: DISCUSS AT LEAST TWO PURPOSES THAT MYTHS SERVED FOR ANCIENT CULTURES SUCH AS THE GREEKS AND ROMANS. Definition of Mythology • The word itself comes from the Greek "mythos" which originally meant "speech" or "discourse" but which later came to mean "fable" or "legend". • The word "myth" will be defined as a story of forgotten or vague origin, basically religious or supernatural in nature, which seeks to explain one or more aspects of the world or a society. • Myths also always teach a moral lesson. • Myths were often told to children to teach them about proper behavior. Discussion Questions for Creation Myth • According to this myth, the earth and the sky was controlled by which god and goddess? • How did Cronus come to control the Earth and the Universe? • Who were the Titans? • Why did Cronus swallow his children? • Who was saved by Gaia from this fate and what was the later significance of this action? • Why was Pandora created by Zeus? • Discuss two similarities and two diffrences between the Greek creation myth and the Judeo-Christian creation story(biblical) Honors Sophomore Assignment • Create a T-chart or Venn diagram comparing and contrasting the Greek creation myth and the JudeoChristian creation story(Biblical). • If you are not familiar with the Judeo-Christian creation story, use the creation story from your own religion. • Make a list of items that you think would be in your own version of Pandora’s Box.
