Surgical treatments include implantation of VADs and heart transplantation. Williams L. Holman, MD HEART & VASCULAR SERVICES Professor, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery VADs are used in patients who need a mechanical assist pump to support proper heart function. These devices are used to bridge patients to another therapy, such as a bridge to heart transplantation, or as a permanent or “destination” therapy as an alternative to transplantation. Sometimes a VAD is used temporarily to help a patient’s heart regain sufficient strength and return to normal function. UAB’s Mechanical Circulatory Support Device Program implants more VADs annually than other regional facilities and is the only program of its kind in Alabama. The UAB Mechanical Circulatory Support Device Program is Medicare approved and has the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for meeting required standards and performance measures. Charles Hoopes, MD HEART & VASCULAR SERVICES Professor, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery Pediatric Transplant Cardiologists UAB’s Heart Transplant Service is one of the top international centers in the management of advanced, end-stage heart failure.
