UAB Weight Loss Medicine
UAB Weight Loss Medicine is a comprehensive resource for patients who want to
lose weight, maintain weight loss, or prevent excessive weight gain during high-risk
medical conditions such as post-injury rehabilitation and breast cancer treatment. As
the Southeast’s first multidisciplinary weight loss medicine program, our UAB weight
loss specialists seek to address the consistent rise in the regional rates of obesity,
diabetes, and hypertension and provide patients with a personalized weight loss
plan tailored to fit their individual needs and circumstances. The UAB Weight Loss
Medicine program provides patients access to top experts and the newest advances
in medical management of obesity with faculty physicians from the UAB Departments
of Medicine and Nutrition Sciences.

Our Approach
Our team approach to weight management benefits patients by providing them with
a collaborative effort between their physician, dietitian, behaviorist, and exercise
trainer to achieve their goal weight. If it is determined that a patient may benefit
from surgical weight loss they will be scheduled to consult with our UAB bariatric
surgeons in conjunction with the program.

Programs & Services
Our Weight Loss Medicine physicians work with patients and their primary physician with the goal of optimizing overall health
while working to better manage and prevent medical conditions caused by being overweight. The program offers a variety of
services and treatment options, such as:
• EatRight by UAB: A lifestyle-oriented weight management program designed to beat the odds of the weight-loss battle by
easing participants into new eating and exercising habits.
• EatRight’s Optifast Program: A complete meal replacement program that is designed for people who need to lose at least
50 pounds.
• National Diabetes Prevention Program: A lifestyle change program for people who are at risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.
• Bariatric Surgery: An option for patients who struggle with obesity and have been unsuccessful with non-surgical means of
treatment. Patients are evaluated by our specialists to determine if they may benefit from bariatric surgery, and are then
provided diet and lifestyle guidance in the pre- and post-operative periods.
• Other UAB weight loss and disease prevention services that may be determined as appropriate by a weight loss physician.
