THEATRE PRACTICUM (THR 151) Fall 2007 M-W-F 3:30 – 4:20 Olin Theatre (Auditorium) C. Daniel Shaw 210 Olin x 6085 [email protected] Text: Any scripts or readings will be provided by the course instructor Participants will meet regularly as a production staff during scheduled class time. These meetings will update production status, discuss and plan for upcoming events, and assess previous activities. Class time is also devoted to stagecraft study and practical applications within the Olin Fine Arts Center. Additionally, the class will work theatre/art events as coordinated by the instructor (see schedule and calendar handout). ____________________________________________________ Practicum is a practical learning experience in selected areas of theatre production. Students enrolled in the practicum will receive ½ course credit (2 credits) for significant and responsible participation in a variety of theatre and fine arts related events at the Olin Fine Arts Center and at other venues on campus. Students are to be involved in the operations for every performance event over the course of the semester. Involvement, in a relevant position, in the semester’s main-stage Student Theatre Company production(s) is also essential. _______________________________________________________ COURSE OBJECTIVES and STUDENT OUTCOMES Upon completion, students will have: 1. Cultivated, through practical experience, a clearer understanding of the fundamental principles used in contemporary dramatic practices. 2. Experienced the application of these fundamentals in a theatrical production. 3. Exercised their creativity, and developed further their theatrical/problem solving talent(s). 4. Undergone a communal experience; a committed one, which produces a deep sense of joint responsibility essential to the success of any theatrical production. 5. Developed a richer appreciation of the art and craft of live performance. GRADING The Performing Arts are a cooperative venture. Any endeavor in theatre cannot be successful without the full cooperation of its participant. Hence, students will be assessed primarily on participation throughout the semester. Separately, participation in the main-stage Student Theatre Company production will be – depending upon the nature of the involvement – overseen by whoever is in the appropriate leadership position. That person will then provide an evaluation of the student’s performance to the course instructor. The instructor’s critique of the student, based on overall involvement, will assess such things as their enthusiasm, initiative, problem solving skills and attitude as perceived over the term. Lastly, the student may be expected to present relevant research documentation to the instructor, as it pertains to their specialized duties during the semester. PARTICIPATION - 50% MAINSTAGE INVOLVEMENT - 15% INSTRUCTOR CRITIQUES - 25% DOCUMENTATION - 10% *Completion of minimal requirements produces a passing grade.
