LAST:
2009 -2011 – SCHAEFFER’S ERA – MULTIMEDIA COLLAGE
WARSAW / EDINBURGH / MADRID
The show is an interactive, audio-visual, multi-media performance featuring the Amadeus Polish
National Radio Orchestra conducted by Agnieszka Duczmal, the Olga Szwajgier Jazz Quartet,
Boguslaw Schaeffer on piano and jazz vocalist Urszula Dudziak / Michał Urbaniak / Jorgos Skolias /
Piotr Tymochowicz / The performance includes Schaeffer's play "A Multimedia Thing", featuring
actors Marek Frąckowiak, Waldemar Obłoza and Agnieszka Wielgosz, along with dancer Witold
Jurewicz and soprano Valentina Pannino. The play is directed by Maciej Sobocinski.
More recently, Schaeffer has become known on the international theatre and music circles for
multimedia performances that include both his musical compositions and his dramatic texts. The most
famous production is Schaeffer's Era, an interactive audiovisual, multimedia performance that reflects
Schaeffer's own musings on contemporary culture, the art of composition and its perception. The show
was created in 2009 by the Aurea Porta Foundation to celebrate Schaeffer's 80th birthday. This
brilliant multimedia improv gala features the Polish National Radio Orchestra conducted by Agnieszka
Duczmal, the Olga Szwajgier Jazz Quartet, Bogusław Schaeffer on piano, soloist Urszula Dudziak,
Schaeffer's instrumental actors such as Marek Frackowiak, Witold Obloza, and Agnieszka Wielgosz,
and Schaeffer's play A Multimedia Thing. In 2010, an ambitious two-hour work was staged at the
EICC as part of the Edinburgh Festival. Professor Richard Demarco, the festival's co-founder, said he
had "not seen anything like it from the times of Kantor," calling Schaeffer's piece "one of the best
productions since the festival was launched several dozen years ago." Both the Edinburgh Spotlight
and the Herald Scotland awarded it 4 of 5 possible stars, calling it a "tremendous show in honour of an
original talent." The Edinburgh Spotlight wrote that "Schaeffer's Era provides a rare and brief
opportunity to be immersed in a compelling multisensory vision of a unique individual." Schaeffer's
Era breaks down the barriers between a variety of genres, providing a bold vision of a true
Renaissance man. The success of the original production prompted Aurea Porta to mount a second
version, which is touring Europe to rave reviews as we speak.
The third edition of Schaeffer's Festival -- a tribute to the art of Poland's most prolific avant-garde
composer, playwright and philosopher Bogusław Schaeffer will take place on November 18 at the
Studio Theater in Warsaw.
As the festival's goal is to present the musical and theatrical output of the artist the highlight of the
festival will be an interactive, multimedia show Era Schaeffera, drawing from Schaeffer's works and
directed by Maciej Sobociński, which will include many improvised elements.
The cast will include actors: Marek Frackowiak, Waldemar Obloza, Agnieszka Wielgosz, Sean
Palmer, Agnieszka Grzybowska, Anna Verma, Piotr Tymochowicz and a famous jazz musician
Michal Urbaniak.
The performance will also feature Valentina Pennino - a soprano, the Olga Szwajgier's jazz quartet and
Amadeus Polish National Radio Orchestra conducted by Agnieszka Duczmal.
The second edition of Era Schaeffera was shown at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, UK, in 2010 and
got very enthusiastic reviews. Richard Demarco, a co-founder of the Fringe Festival, will be a special
guest at this year's Era Schaeffera in Warsaw.
Schaeffer is one of the prominent artists of the postwar European avant-garde, widely considered to be
the 'father of new music in Poland'. An author of forty plays, many books on modern music, as well as
more than five hundred musical compositions, Schaeffer is also a graphic designer and amongst the
most frequently performed playwrights in Poland today.

His Klavier Konzert formed part of the film soundtrack to David Lynch's Inland Empire and Eugène
Ionesco wrote Three Dreams about Schaeffer in his honor.
