Climate in Andes Research Humid Middle Latitude The humid middle latitude climate (C) zone of Chile, South America's long, narrow country in the southwest, is divided into two biome classifications as it covers so much distance, resulting in sometimes vast differences in terrain and bodies of water. All humid middle latitude regions, also known as temperate regions, are characterized by dry, hot summers and damp, cold winters. Northern Chile is further categorized as a Mediterranean climate (Csb) subgroup and is characterized by extremely dry summers, and summer wildfires are an annual concern. The southern coast of Chile surrounding the Andes Mountain base is considered a moist continental climate (Cfb) subgroup, as it experiences vast seasonal changes between summer and winter, as well as a virtually nonexistent dry season. http://www.ehow.com/list_7198339_four-climate-regions-andes_.html In the tropical areas, climate and vegetation depend chiefly on elevation. The foothills, up to about 3,000 feet (900 m) above sea level, are called the tierra caliente (hot land), an area of tropical rain forests. Above this zone, extending to about 6,500 feet (2,000 m), is the tierra templada (temperate land), with mixed deciduous trees and grasslands. Still higher, up to about 10,000 feet (3,000 m), is the tierra fría (cold land), with coniferous forests, hardy grasses, and shrubs. Still higher, there are Alpine pastures, called páramos, that extend above the tierra fría to the snow line. http://geography.howstuffworks.com/south-america/the-andes4.htm The climate is temperate ranging from 65 to 75 degrees. The comfortable weather lasts year round. The comfortable climate has resulted in a higher population in this zone. Tierra Templada 3,000 - 6,000 feet above sea level temperate climate rarely frost "Land of Eternal Spring" lower elevations have tropical plants (palms, bamboo, jungle vines) higher elevation has broad leaf evergreen forests http://reyesclasswiki.wikispaces.com/CHAPTER+13+Period+4 https://keeganwiki.wikispaces.com/file/view/Ch.+13++Life+in+the+Central+Andes+-+Adapting+to+a+Mountainous+Region.pdf
