CLARITY Installation Manual CLARITY LIGHT FIXTURE OVERVIEW The Clarity overbed light fixture is specifically designed for the healthcare patient room and is installed over the patient’s bed. By incorporating reading, ambient and examination lighting in one unit, the Clarity unit is designed to enhance the comfort of the patient and meet the needs of the healthcare provider. The Clarity fixture utilizes a unique Convenience Switching feature (optional) which provides instant patient exam lighting with a single adjustment by tilting the upper lens forward. UNPACKING AND INSPECTION 1. Upon receipt of Clarity units and prior to unpacking, inspect shipping containers for damage. Document any damage found and notify the carrier and Modular Services Company. 2. Locate the carton for the unit you wish to install. Labels at each end of the carton identify the unit type and general description of contents, as well as the room number or area of installation (if applicable). 3. Carefully open each carton. Dispose of all excess packaging material, leaving cardboard under the unit to protect the face during installation. 4. Inspect units for defects in materials or workmanship prior to installation. It is the responsibility of the customer to report any damage or deficiencies to Modular Services immediately upon discovery. 5. Review final approved shop drawings and submittal booklet. These documents will provide you with technical details specific to your installation, such as: • Wiring diagrams • Equipment types and quantities • Shop drawings of each type unit • Room numbers and location in the building (if applicable) UNIT INSTALLATION This product must be installed in accordance with the applicable installation code by a person familiar with the construction and operation of the product and the hazards involved. Do not connect to an ungrounded supply. Follow any specific instructions on product labels. Disconnect power to all circuits before wiring. Wall Preparation and Shimming NOTE: Larger slot in center of backplate is for supply wiring feed. Smaller slot near center wire feed is for low-voltage wiring when low-voltage controller option is provided. Lay fixture backplate against wall in mounting location over junction box. Select at least two (2) of the 3/8" diameter holes in backplate for mounting fastener locations. Mark fastener locations on wall using backplate as a template. Check wall for straightness using backplate as a straightedge, noting any gaps between wall and backplate at fastener locations (Figure 1). Select suitable shims to fill gaps so that backplate is not forced into a bent or twisted position when secured to wall. Shims should fill gap from top to bottom of backplate for maximum stability. It is the responsibility of the party installing the fixture to select appropriate fasteners suitable for the wall material and construction. Screws driven into wall studs are recommended for maximum security. 2. Secure backplate to wall with fasteners at the previously marked locations, using shims as required. 3. At least two (2) fasteners should be located in Area "H" above the backplate hook (Figure 2). Fasteners must be countersunk/flush. Backplate Hook Figure 2. Hang fixture on backplate, engaging fixture hook over backplate hook. 3. If bed power interrupt switching (“bed-stop”) option was ordered, see Figure 3 for assembly of provided spacers over backplate studs. If bed-stop option is not provided, omit the spacers shown in Figure 3. 4. Secure fixture with washers and nuts provided. 5. If bed-stop option is provided, test fixture for free vertical movement. Fixture must be free to ”float” vertically for proper bed-stop operation (see Figure 5). Figure 3. Only qualified electricians should attempt installation of this product. 1. Disconnect power to all circuits before wiring. 2. For fixtures with bed-stop option, connect 12 AWG stranded leads (by others) to building wire in junction box, then connect to fixture leads inside fixture. Do not run solid wire into fixtures with bed-stop option. Fixture must be free to "float" on mounting plate. 3. Following the wiring diagram provided with the fixture, connect fixture leads to power supply leads and connect any optional switching leads using connectors (by others) suitable for the gauge and number of wires being used. 4. If low voltage controller was ordered, refer to wiring diagram on controller label for wiring options. 5. Connect grounding wire of fixture to a proper ground. LENS INSTALLATION 1. Orient each lens as shown in Figure 4, item 1. At the front of the lens is a groove which runs the length of the lens. Position this groove on the flanges indicated. See detail “A” for added clarity. 2. Rotate the lens into position until the lens tab comes in contact with the fixture housing (item 2). 3. Starting on one end, gently flex the lens so that the lens tab snaps into place (item 3). Continue along the length of the lens until it is completely retained. 4. To remove the lens, pull on the curled tab (item 4). Start at one end and proceed along the lens. NOTE: Do not use other tools such as screwdrivers to pry on the lens during installation or removal. Test continuity from COM TERMINAL to NO TERMINAL. 2. Proper function will have continuity with housing against backplate (Figure 5, detail “B”). 3. As housing is moved away from backplate, continuity should be lost. 4. Follow bed-stop adjustment procedure below if correction is needed. Bed-Stop Adjustment: 1. Remove ballast cover. 2. Loosen two (2) Phillips screws, as shown in Figure 5, detail “A”. 3. Adjust bed-stop to engage when housing is against backplate and disengage when housing is pushed up (away from backplate). 4. Tighten Phillips screws to secure. 5. Test bed-stop's function for operation (per testing function above). Figure 5. Housing Assembly Housing Adjustment Screws NO Terminal Housing COM Terminal Backplate Detail A Detail B BULB INSTALLATION The Clarity light fixture uses four fluorescent bulbs (provided by others) — two in the upper (exam light) section and two in the lower section. To install bulbs, remove the translucent lens by pulling outward on the curved lip of the lens, starting at one end. Insert bulbs into brackets and replace lens. 5 CARE AND MAINTENANCE 1. Clean with mild detergent and warm water. Do not use lubricants or oils on unit. 2. Avoid excessive moisture build-up, as it can damage mechanisms in the unit. 3. Disinfect as required with disinfectant approved by the Environmental Protection Agency. 4. To remove difficult spots or stains, use standard household cleansers and a soft-bristled brush. 5. For parts or repairs, contact your sales representative. INSTALLATION TERMS AND CONDITIONS Each Modular Services unit, or unit section, shall be completely pre-wired for normal, emergency and low voltage according to the approved submittal. Communication devices and wiring shall be supplied by others. These devices include nurse call, television, code blue, telephone, monitor jacks, etc. The customer shall be responsible for all electrical conduits (above the junction boxes), wiring hook-up of electrical services, and if applicable, interconnect wiring between sections. All hardware light fixtures shall be installed, wired and lamped by contractor. After installation is complete, the customer shall test equipment functions, as well as electrical receptacles and ground, in accordance with the National Electrical Code. Medical gas contractor shall be responsible for piping and hook-up of all medical gas services. The medical gas contractor shall be responsible for purging, pressure testing, gas identification, and system certification in accordance with NFPA 99. Modular Services Company shall have no responsibility or liability for delays, however caused. Owner shall hold Modular Services harmless from damages or injury related to any failure or neglect of owner, its employees, agents or licensees. Modular Services shall not be liable for consequential damages; makes no warranties, expressed or implied; and assumes no obligation other than those expressly contained herein. WARRANTY Modular Services Company warrants that all equipment assemblies shall be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of 12 months from date of the owner’s acceptance to the installing contractor or the date the equipment is put into service, whichever comes first. Warranty excludes electric lamps and/or any material not furnished by Modular Services. Warranty does not cover damage due to improper installation and/or abuse. It is the responsibility of the customer to report any noted product deficiencies to Modular Services immediately upon discovery. It is the responsibility of Modular Services to expediently resolve the discrepancy. Any modification made to the product without the written authorization from Modular Services will void this warranty. Also, in the event product modifications or repairs are made without the written consent of Modular Services, Modular Services shall not be held liable for any cost associated with the modification or repair. There are no warranties of fitness which extend beyond the description on the face hereof. 500 E.
