Propaganda in Advertising
Propaganda is all around! We see it today in America. People want us to
believe things, buy things, and understand things. They get us to do all of
these things through advertisements. Ad companies work hard to make
people believe certain things about their products by using a lot of the tools
which were used in Mao’s propaganda.
Assignment: Find 3 different advertisements which are trying to convince
you to buy something or to believe something.
1. Paste each advertisement onto a separate sheet of paper.
2. Write underneath it what you think the person who made the ad wants
you to believe about the product.
3. How do they get you to see that product in a certain way? Do you
believe them? Do you buy into that image of the product?
4. Which of the 5 different techniques is being used in your ad?
5. Overall, do you think that these ads are effective? Why or why not?
Example:
This ad for Coke uses familiar and famous faces and images to get people to
relate to the product. Most people like Elvis, the Beatles and the Rolling
Stones. They see them as quality. So, when they see them in a Coke bottle,
they think of quality. This helps people think better things about Coke. The
tagline also makes the association that, like the famous people and things,
Coke is something that is classic and to be remembered fondly.
