Six Strings/eagle’s work/Dog • All 3 poems convey the creative imagination at work, although in Dog the imagination is at work creating an illusion. Dog, therefore, has an Ironic Voice or Tone. • Surrealism – art, literature or theatre that is characterized by fantastic or incongruous imagery or effects produced by unnatural juxtapositions. In these three poems the surrealism is found in the dichotomies of theme. The Six Strings – beauty and suffering eagle’s work – destruction and creation Dog – control and illusion Six Strings/eagle’s work/Dog • Metaphor (Vehicle/Tenor) Vehicle – the images through which the poet conveys the idea Tenor – the idea or thematic intention behind the metaphor • Free Verse – poetry without a regular rhythm(meter) or rhyme. This is different from Blank Verse which is unrhymed verse written in iambic pentameter (unstressed/stressed). Blank Verse is commonly used by Shakespeare. • Cadence – the rhythm patterns used in free verse when it is read aloud to create structure and emphasis. This is affected by the Diction and the Syntax. Six Strings/eagle’s work/Dog • DICTION – choice and form of words. There is a connection between diction and cadence(sound device). Also one between diction and theme. Six Strings – Use of the word its – guitar is not humanized even though personification is used in relation to the voice coming from “its” mouth. Highlights the animal(predatory) nature of second half of poem. Also called “wooden tank” – sense of entrapment through the creative act. eagle’s work – Use of nd for and – speed/cleanliness of eagle’s work (kill) - soul’s movement at the end – pride/joy Dog – Agyeeei (onomatopoeia) – the dog is allowed a sense of power by it’s human - Ouch of the year – Dog’s sense of self (spoof of an award) Six Strings/eagle’s work/Dog • SYNTAX – sentence structure Six Strings Two simple sentences – mournful sounds One complex sentence – contradiction of deadly web and star “and” – used to balance the compound structure Eagle’s work One simple sentence One complex sentence – imagery turns nasty/painful Dog Three simple sentences – dogs imagination works in simple/direct way to place itself in the center of the universe.
