Age of Pericles • Pericles ruled Athens from 460-429 B.C. • He believed that all male citizens, regardless of wealth or social class, should take part in government. • Athens became the political and cultural center of the eastern Mediterranean. Steps Continued • Alcibiades takes over the Athenian army. • He is accused of working against religion of city and flees. • Alcibiades is brought back to defeat Sparta. • He won many victories, but could not change tide of war • 404 B.C.
