The Purpose and Goals of the American Council of Vedic Astrology
Dennis Flaherty
The American Council of Vedic Astrology
was founded during the Second International
Symposium on Vedic Astrology, held at San
Rafael, in the bay area of California in the fall
of 1993. It was founded with the help of
India’s leading astrologers. Both Dr. B.V.
Raman and Mr. K.N. Rao of the Indian
Council of Astrological Sciences (ICAS),
which is the largest Vedic Astrology
organization in India, and Mr. Chakrapani
Ullal, noted Indian astrologer living in
America and Honorary Chairman for the
American Council of Vedic Astrology, gave
their experience and blessings in the formation
of the Council, and were instrumental in the
formative
stages
of
the
Council’s
development. ACVA, as the Council is
known, is the first organization in the Western
world dedicated to the dissemination and
teaching of Vedic astrology.
ACVA’s infrastructure consists of a
national center, several regional centers in
major metropolitan areas, as well as local
chapters. The national center serves as the
primary communications network, while the
regional and local centers serve to provide
teaching and instruction in Vedic Astrology.
Regional and local centers will at least
initially be independent financially of the
national center. Approved teachers in the
Council can also function independently as
teachers and tutors of Vedic Astrology with
recognition by the Council.
The purpose and the goals of ACVA are
broad in scope:
• To establish and maintain an educational
program designed to teach the profession of
Vedic astrology.
• To provide levels of certification for both
practitioners and teachers of Vedic
Astrology.
• To establish and maintain a professional
association for Vedic astrologers.
• To suggest standards and a code of ethics
for the practitioners of Vedic astrology.
• To serve as a networking center for Vedic
astrology, including coordination of
activities and communication between
regional and local centers, and between
different teachers approved by the Council.
• To
provide
support
for
national
symposiums to enable members and the
public to hear from leading teachers of
Vedic Astrology. These classes will help to
develop and improve the skills of those in
the profession of Vedic Astrology.
• To encourage empirical research studies
into astrological principles of all types.
• To sponsor speaking engagements.
• To publish a quarterly journal.
ACVA’s credo is that we hold the science
of astrology to be of utmost importance for all
humanity. We regard the differing types of
astrology devised throughout the world as
different branches or different techniques
within a universal science of astrology.
Within this universal science of astrology,
Vedic astrology represents one of the oldest,
most continuous and developed systems. It is
the goal of this council to promote Vedic
astrology in its global relevance as part of an
effort to revive astrology throughout the world
in its true depth and breadth. We encourage in
a spirit of complete openness, dialogue with
tropical astrologers, and astrologers from all
schools of thought.
ACVA has over 130 founding members and
over 20 approved teachers in such diverse
places as San Diego, Los Angeles, San
Francisco, Seattle, Santa Fe, Sedona, Boulder,
Dallas, New York, Boston, Washington, D.C.
and Toronto.
There are currently three levels of
membership in the Council, professional,
student and patron. For an annual donation of
$50 you can become a student member of
ACVA, or for a donation of $108 you too can
become a founding member of the Council.
To be recognized as a patron, a donation of a
minimum of $500 is required, thought
donations of any amount will be gratefully
accepted. ACVA is currently pending non
profit status as an educational institution in the
state of Arizona.
If you would like to support ACVA’s work,
set up an apprenticeship program, or begin
your study of Vedic astrology, please consider
becoming a member of the American Council
of Vedic Astrology. The Council is open to
people of all backgrounds, to anyone who
sincerely wants to learn or support Vedic
Astrology. Won’t you join us?
