Parallax Activity

Question: How does the distance to an object affect its apparent movement?
Hypotheses: The closer the object is, _________________________________
Procedures: (Simple Parallax)
1) Measure the distance from the “Sun” to the #4 position of Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Plot
and label their positions on the grid. (Each floor tile is 1 foot by 1 foot)
2) Plot and label the #2 and #6 positions of Earth on the grid, as well.
3) Draw lines from the #2 position of Earth through each planet to the stars on the grid. Also,
record the apparent position of the planets on the Star Map. (Have Mr. Carr check work.)
4) Repeat step 3 from the #6 position of Earth, but with a different color.
