CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES MEMORIZATION & PERFORMANCE: You will memorize, rehearse, and perform in this class. This is a major part of Theatre Arts. BELLRINGERS: Students will alternate Journaling and Warm-ups, utilizing a student as Assistant Director (which changes weekly). A. JOURNALING: a very important tool in the Theatre classroom. Most days students will be asked to reflect in their journal about a specific question or something they’ve learned in life and/or in class. Students should bring a journal that fits their tastes to class every day. B. WARMUPS: You will be expected to participate in all activities at the beginning of class to warm up your mind, body, and voice . GAMES/ACTIVITIES: Teambuilding and confidence-building games and activities. All students are expected to participate every day. DAILY WORK: These will be due on the date assigned. You are responsible for your own progress on an assignment, even if it requires work outside of class. Be responsible. Use class time wisely. ***THEATRE ARTS FOR HS CREDIT students are required to earn 20 extracurricular hours per semester for 20% of their 2nd and 4th quarter grades.*** These hours can be earned through participation in after-school productions (cast or crew) or by competing in UIL tournaments on Saturdays . PLAY PRODUCTION: As part of this class, students will work in class on one or more plays per semester. All students will perform AND make sets, props, costumes, etc. MOVIES: We will watch and discuss a variety of films in class. Generally, we watch the final 5-10 minutes of each class, so it can take several days to complete each movie. Movies we may see include Shrek the Musical, The Reduced Shakespeare Company, August Rush, Princess Bride, Bicentennial Man, Hook, and clips of many others. We may talk about the director's role, the actors' interpretations, the editing, the history, characterization, and a variety of other things. For a complete list, please refer to the Movie Permission Slip. All movies shown in Theatre class are G, PG, or PG-13. For that reason, a Movie Permission Slip for viewing the PG and PG-13 movies will need to be signed by the parents/guardians. Students who do not turn in the permission slip will be required to do a MOVIE REVIEW IN 5 PARAGRAPHS for each day the movie is shown instead. ATTENDING PERFORMANCES: All Theatre students are strongly encouraged to see and review productions performed by the Gregory-Portland Junior and High School drama department. Students can also attend plays at community or professional theatres. This includes improv shows, musicals, one act play, and student-directed one-act plays. ***Theatre I students can earn hours towards their 20 required extracurricular hours. MATERIALS: A journal and pen/pencil are necessary on the first day. Other Theatre supplies include things like paint brushes, glue sticks, and other items that the students may already have, such as markers and paper. Students may collaborate as a team to collect supplies. A Scavenger Hunt for Supply list will be assigned soon.
