We will be writing about some of the objects found in a Synagogue
and comparing them to the artefacts found within a Christian
church.
Light and shadow link—we will create
‘shadow puppet’ Menorahs using a combination of transparent and opaque materials.
The candle flames will be made of translucent orange plastic so that when children
shine their lights at the menorah the flames
appear to be lit in the shadow. We will discuss the terms opaque and transparent/
translucent.
We will look at the designs and symbols found on
the outside of Synagogues and compare them to
places of worship in Christianity. Do we see any
symbols that are the same? Are there differences?
We will look at ancient Hebrew script and practise writing our
names in Hebrew.
We will write some instructions to make some
We will learn some traditional Jewish words and phrases:
Shul—school
Kippah—prayer cap
Tallit—prayer shawl
Ner Tamid—ever lasting light
Judaism
Children will design the outside of their own Synagogue including the Star of David and The menorah. Chn will pay attention to the detailed brick
work and colour schemes of synagogues and try
to replicate this in their own work.
We will create some parchment paper using tea
staining and fill it with symbols related to Judaism
and written work surrounding the objects we
have looked at. This will form part of our ‘Torah
Scrolls’ display.
Whole school faith week.
RE
We will look in detail at the features and symbols found on the Synagogue. We will discuss
the special items of clothing worn by Jewish
people for worship and discuss showing respect and how this is done in comparison between Judaism and Catholicism.
We will learn about the exterior and interior
of the Synagogue and discuss and write about
the features and explore how people of faith
feel when they are in one of their special places.
Year 3 Thematic planning
We will create Yom Kippur slippers and Rosh
Hashanah new year cards
Numeracy
We will look at the seven candles on the
Menorah and relate this back to the story
of creation and the days of the week.
We will look at the 9 candles on the Hanukkah Menorah and discuss that extra
candles are used during this special time.
History/Geography
We will look briefly at the origins of Hebrew
script and discuss that it is an ancient language in
comparison to our own. We will look briefly at
the origin countries of Judaism (Israel Palestine)
and identify these on maps, globes and have a
