Literacy: Science Art/DT We will be writing about some of the objects found in a Synagogue and comparing them to the artefacts found within a Christian church. Light and shadow link—we will create ‘shadow puppet’ Menorahs using a combination of transparent and opaque materials. The candle flames will be made of translucent orange plastic so that when children shine their lights at the menorah the flames appear to be lit in the shadow. We will discuss the terms opaque and transparent/ translucent. We will look at the designs and symbols found on the outside of Synagogues and compare them to places of worship in Christianity. Do we see any symbols that are the same? Are there differences? We will look at ancient Hebrew script and practise writing our names in Hebrew. We will write some instructions to make some We will learn some traditional Jewish words and phrases: Shul—school Kippah—prayer cap Tallit—prayer shawl Ner Tamid—ever lasting light Judaism Children will design the outside of their own Synagogue including the Star of David and The menorah. Chn will pay attention to the detailed brick work and colour schemes of synagogues and try to replicate this in their own work. We will create some parchment paper using tea staining and fill it with symbols related to Judaism and written work surrounding the objects we have looked at. This will form part of our ‘Torah Scrolls’ display. Whole school faith week. RE We will look in detail at the features and symbols found on the Synagogue. We will discuss the special items of clothing worn by Jewish people for worship and discuss showing respect and how this is done in comparison between Judaism and Catholicism. We will learn about the exterior and interior of the Synagogue and discuss and write about the features and explore how people of faith feel when they are in one of their special places. Year 3 Thematic planning We will create Yom Kippur slippers and Rosh Hashanah new year cards Numeracy We will look at the seven candles on the Menorah and relate this back to the story of creation and the days of the week. We will look at the 9 candles on the Hanukkah Menorah and discuss that extra candles are used during this special time. History/Geography We will look briefly at the origins of Hebrew script and discuss that it is an ancient language in comparison to our own. We will look briefly at the origin countries of Judaism (Israel Palestine) and identify these on maps, globes and have a look at the countries in detail using Google Earth.
