Disinfectant and antimicrobial chemicals: US
demand will grow 6 percent annually
US demand for disinfectant and antimicrobial chemicals is
projected to grow nearly 6 percent annually to 735 million
USD in 2007. The high costs of product development and
registration have impeded the introduction of new products
and the cultivation of new markets. There is some
uncertainty about the value of using disinfectants in
non-critical applications due to concerns that overuse could
lead to heartier strains of bacteria. Paints and coatings will
remain the largest market for antimicrobial additives,
supported by the trend toward low-solvent coatings
formulations that require greater antimicrobial protection.
The outlook for disinfectant chemicals for consumer
products will depend in part on the success of promotional
campaigns. The Freedonia Group, Inc. Iodophors will record
above -average growth and, with organometallics, will
comprise almost 45 percent of all disinfectants and
antimicrobials in 2007 due to expanding applications in
low-solvent coatings and use in hard surface cleaners.
Prospects are also favorable for organosulfurs and
chloroisocyanurates. These and other trends are presented
in a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc
(www.fredoniagroup.com).
