1) Dred Scott – Enslaved African-American, sued in federal court seeking his freedom, but lost in a landmark
decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1857
2) Kansas-Nebraska Act- Kansas and Nebraska were given the choice of entering the U.S. as a slave or free
state
3) John Brown – An abolitionist hanged for treason after his raid on a federal armory
4) Republican party – Northern members of the Whig party left in order to fight the spread of slavery
5) South Carolina – After Lincoln’s election, it was the first state to secede from the Union
6) Sam Houston - As governor of Texas, he spoke strongly against Texas joining the Confederacy
7) Albert Sidney Johnston – Second highest ranking Confederate army officer killed in the Battle of Shiloh
