Introducing the New Drama Curriculum
Performance and Workshop
The MDEA has arranged for Pauline Broderick
(Veteran Teacher and Arts Educator) and Dr. Beryl Peters
(Arts Education Consultant for Manitoba Education and
Advanced Learning) to introduce the exciting new
Curriculum at the beginning of the day. This will be
followed by informative break-out sessions where you can
explore each of the Essential Learning Areas and learn
how to plan within this new framework. You should finish
the morning with a general understanding of the new
curriculum, and inspiration for using it in your teaching.
Our afternoon begins with a performance of Giving Voice.
This show is Sarasvàti Productions’ latest youth-based
piece created by and about youth in care. It is a relevant,
interactive theatrical experience and will feature youth
performers tackling the challenges youth in care face in
their everyday lives.
Voluntary implementation of Grades 9 to 12 Arts
Education courses began September 2013 and will be
extended through the 2014-2015 school year.
Workshop Choices:
*System-wide implementation of the new Arts Education

Workshop Descriptions
Playing with the Pros – Sandy White
This workshop, taught by the brilliant Sandy White, is for the experienced drama/theatre instructor who wants to take
their teaching to the next level. Participants will look at how to challenge your students by bringing theory into the
classroom and by empowering students to take their drama work out to the public. The workshop will explore turning
drama into theatre. It will feature discussions on topics such as how to apply the intent of the drama game to the
theatre, grappling with the classics of Theatre, the strength of the script and script analysis. Participants are asked bring
at least one lesson, activity or idea you want to share with others.
Special Effects Makeup: Blood, Bruises, & Deconstructing Special Effects – Kyle Collins
Fresh from the Winnipeg Fringe zombie extravaganza show Cursed, Kyle Collins introduces, demonstrates, deconstructs,
and guides the creation of special effects on the stage and screen. Instead of revulsion at the site of a zombie creature
shuffling towards its prey with an eight-inch piece of glass jutting from its eye, we examine the tools, techniques, and
materials likely used to create the effect; thereby taking its power away.
In this seminar, you will be introduced to the Blood, Guts, & Gore – Special Effects Makeup unit that Kyle has been
utilizing to great success for the past four years. This unit helps to appeal to the artistic and hands-on artists in the
theatre classroom. In this workshop, you will learn the materials used to create stage effects and how to use them; how
to construct two basic effects with minimal effort, time, and materials; and how to create a believable effect with
household materials.
Energize your Devised Theatre Pieces – Talia Pura
Have you been doing Collective Creations forever, and are ready for some new exercises to generate material? This
workshop will use TIMS - Tableaux, Improvisation, Movement and the Spoken Word, to give you the possibility of
looking at collectives in a new way.
Instructor Talia Pura is an accomplished theatre artist and educator. She just released her second book CUES: Theatre
Training & Projects from Classroom to Stage. This book, and others brought by the publisher, will be available for
purchase at SAGE.
Flat Building – Jim Alexander
The basic theatrical flat is one of the essential pieces of scenery that any theatre company can use. It can easily
transform any space into another world. Although it is a basic piece of scenery, many teachers are unsure of the best
methods to create these transformative pieces of canvas and wood. If you are one of those teachers, this workshop will
empower and inspire you!
In this workshop, the talented Jim Alexander will demonstrate an affordable lesson that will teach participants how to
properly build a stage flat and stretch canvas over a stage flat. This lesson is easily transferable to students (Grade 5
through to Grade 12), so it can be used to encourage the budding set designers in our midst. Participants will be working
with practical materials and they will receive a handout to use in their classes.
Improve Character Through Improv – Stephen Sim
Creating characters that are stirring and believable is not an easy task, but it is an essential skill to have as a theatre
artist. In this workshop, participants will use Improv-based activities to create dynamic, well-rounded characters.
Come out and learn hands-on activities that you can employ on Monday that will help your students create bigger,
broader characters!
Stephen is one half of Winnipeg's own international improv troupe, CRUMBS, having performed extensively all over the
world. This has meant that CRUMBS has been able to work with every single improviser (likely) at least once, some of
whom are considered to be gurus, innovators and pioneers in the art form. CRUMBS then steals of the good ideas from
all over the world and use them for themselves. On this day, Stephen will share some of these with you!
