Lesson Objective:
Students will be able to differentiate
between the motions of divergent,
convergent, and transform plate
boundaries
Why do tectonic
plates cause
landforms and
natural disasters?
Plate Boundaries:
• A “plate boundary” is the border
between two tectonic plates.
3 Types of Plate Boundaries
• Divergent boundary.
• Convergent boundary.
• Transform boundary.
Divergent Boundaries:
• Two plates slide away from each
other.
Divergent Boundaries:
• Where plates move apart, midocean ridges or rift valleys are
formed.
Rift Valley, Ecuador
Convergent Boundaries:
• Two plates slide towards each other.
Convergent Boundaries:
• Plates colliding create either
mountains OR trenches.
Transform Boundaries
• Two plates slide past each other.
Transform Boundaries:
• Plates sliding past each other cause
earthquakes.
Sometimes, earthquakes can cause
“tsunamis” or giant waves!
Game Time!
• For each type of plate, there is a hand
motion that you are going to learn
• You are then going to find a partner
• When I call out the name of the plate I
want the hand motion for, the partner
who gets it will move on to the next
partner.
• The winner of the whole class will go
against me.
• If you beat me, you win a prize.
