Roman Homes
The type of house someone had depended on their financial situation. Wealthy
Romans typically lived in larger and more comfortable houses. Each home had
large rooms, fine furniture, and beautiful gardens. Usually in the center would be
an innner court called an Atrium. Wealthy Romans would also have homes called
villas on their country estates.
However, many Romans were poor, which led to poor living conditions. They lived
in apartment buildings made of stone and wood . Many families were forced to
move into one room due to high rent. Roman apartments would be up to 6 stories
high and would often collapse because they were so poorly built.
