Zoo Day 2013
Directions: You will be exploring species and their habitats at the zoo while attempting to justify
the preservation of biodiversity. This packet contains a series of questions and activities that must
be completed by the end of your zoo day. Some questions ask you to take a photo as evidence.
Please upload the photos to Instagram and tag it as #apesgonecray. Fee free to ask zoo caretakers
for help. THIS PACKET IS FOR A GRADE AND IS DUE AT 3:30PM WHEN YOU GET OFF THE BUS. As
always, you are representing Alliance Media Arts High School and are expected to respect the
people and animals at the zoo. Do not feed the animals; do not litter; do not misbehave – have fun!

Section 1: Animal Hunt
Directions: Find an animal that fits the following descriptions. Write the name of the animal, its
habitat, diet and an adaptation that allows the animal to survive in their natural environment. You
must take a photo of at least one of the following animals with someone from your group present in
the photo.

Section 2: Endangered Species
Directions: The Los Angeles Zoo is home to over 40 endangered species. You must identify and locate
at least 4 animals that are on the endangered species list. Ask a zoo caretaker why they are on the list
and what the population management plan or species survival plan is for each particular animal.
Record their answer. Then take a group photo with the caretaker.

Section 3: Field Study Observations
Directions: You are now a zoologist working on a team studying the behaviors of animal species. It is
your job to observe and study TWO animals. For each of the animals, spend a minimum of 15 minutes
observing a single individual or a group of individuals. Take very detailed notes about the behavior
and other facts posted by the exhibit. It is important to concentrate on your observations. After
observing your animal, take a picture of the animal AND a picture of yourself acting like the animal.

Section 4: Human Interactions

Directions: The California Condor Rescue Zone is open from 10am-4:30pm. You must explore this are
