Phonics Workshop

Why is phonics important?
• Impact upon pupil Reading and Writing
skills
• Links between Communication and
Language and PSE development.
How do we teach phonics?
• Letters & Sounds
• Plans based around Letters & Sounds suggested structure & activities.
• There are 6 phases.
– Phase 1 Develops the importance of listening and attuning to sounds.
Crucial before segmenting & blending. (Nursery/Reception)
– Phase 2 19 phonemes- focus on verbal segmenting & blending CVC words.
– VC words- up, if, am & ‘silly’ words- ip, ug, ock & 5 tricky words. (Reception)
– Phase 3 Further 25 sounds. Digpraphs & Trigraphs are introduced (ch, sh,
igh) Make phonetically plausible attempts at reading/ writing CVC words.
– Read more tricky words & begin to spell some accurately.
– ( Pupils should be secure at this phase by end of Reception)
How do we teach phonics?
Phase 4
Reading & Spelling. CVCC, CCVC words. Words with adjacent
consonants (e.g sand) and two syllable words. Build up
reading, writing and spelling of tricky words. (Year 1)
Phase 5
Write all common graphemes. Read & spell phonetically
decodable two and three syllable words. Read
automatically & spell all words in the list of 100 high
frequency words. (Pupils should be secure at this phase by
the end of year 1)
Phase 6 Phonemes spelt in more than one way
(see/sea/which/witch). Spelling patterns. Prefixes &
suffixes. (Year2)

How phonics sessions are structured
• 20 minutes
• Revisit- link sounds to letters/ recap ‘tricky’
words.
• Teach- new sound or new word. E.g Blending
& segmenting skills (verbal- my turn/ your
turn)
• Practise- e.g matching games to recognise
new sound/ word
• Apply- Read or write using new sounds learnt.

• This is a digraph (2 letters that make one
sound).
• We know this sound already. (We have seen it
before as ai- train, snail, mail, tail, rain.)
• See it, say it. Focus on the shape of mouth,
position of tongue, teeth, lips.
• Look in the mirror.
