u, b, f, e, l, h, sh, r, j, v, y, w,
th, z, ch, qu, x, ng, nk
• Stretchy – Some sounds are stretched when
we teach them.
• Bouncy – Some sounds are bounced when
we teach them.
Fred is a green frog who can only speak
in sounds. So Fred talk is when the
children sound out each sound to help
them blend and read the word.
To help the children read at school we
say try Fred Talking that word.
• Blending using Speed Sound Cards
Speed sound cards are used to help the children
with hearing the sounds in words. The children
help to ‘make’ a word using the sound cards.
They then ‘sweep’ their finger underneath to
blend the sounds and read the word.
• Blending using magnetic letters
Small magnetic tiles are used to help children
identify letter shapes and develop skills of
blending and segmenting.
• Fred Fingers are used to help children with
their spelling.
• To spell a word we break it down into sounds
this is called segmenting.
• When we are segmenting a word we match
each sound to a finger and press a finger as
we say the sound. Then we blend the word
together.
• Nonsense Words are words that are not real
words but allow the children to practise Fred
Talking and blending sounds. E.g. f-o-t, g-e-b,
z-a-n.
• Ditty Books
• Children continue to revise the simple speed
sounds
• (Set 1) including ch, th, sh, ng and nk.
• They now use their sound knowledge to read
short pieces of text.
