LIFE PROCESSES
Looking at living things
Living things



Although all living things look different from
each other, they all have eight things in
common.
These eight things are called life processes.
Something is only alive if it does all eight
processes.
THE EIGHT LIFE
PROCESSES
1 – Transport
All living things
circulate
materials


Animals move
substances around
their bodies.
Plants have water
move up from the
roots to their
leaves and food
moves from their
leaves to their
roots.
2 - Regulation
All living things
are sensitive



All living things respond to
changes in their
environment. Living things
notice changes in their
surroundings and react to
them. They maintain an
internal balance called
homeostasis.
Eg. Plants grow towards the
light.
Eg. People react to the
temperature around them.
3 - Nutrition
All living things
need nutrition



Food is used to provide energy.
Green plants make their own
food using sunlight.
Animals eat plants or other
animals.
4 - Excretion
All living things
get rid of wastes


Waste substances
must be removed
from the body.
Plants and animals
both need to get rid
of waste gas and
water.
5 - Respiration
All living things
respire


Plants and animals
use the oxygen in
the air to turn food
into energy.
This process occurs
on a cellular level.
6 - Growth
All living things
grow


Babies grow into
adults.
Seedlings grow into
plants.
7 - Synthesis
All living things
synthesize

All living organisms
create complex
substances in their
bodies from simpler
ones.
8 - Reproduction
All living things
reproduce




Animals have babies.
New plants grow from
seeds.
This life processes also
occurs in each organism
for repair and renewal.
This is the only life
process that is not
necessary for the
survival of the organism.
