Words Their Way- Classroom Activities
You must complete three activities in class by the end of the two week rotation.
Solo Sort- Sort your words on your own. Check your sort from the first day to make sure you
are correct. Record your sort in your journal.
Blind Sort- Ask a partner to work with you for this assignment. The partner should lay down a
word from each category as a header. Your partner then reads each word aloud to you. You
determine which category the word goes in by ONLY hearing the word. The partner lays down
the word where you say it goes. YOU move the word if you put it in the wrong category.
***Record your blind sort in your journal to practice writing them one more time. Have your
partner sign your paper.***
Written Sort- Ask a partner to quietly help you with this assignment. The partner randomly
calls the words aloud. You write the words in the correct categories. Repeat the words if you
make an error.
Word Hunt-Hunt for words that fit any of your categories. Look in books you are reading in
the classroom. Try to find at least 2 new words for each category. Write down the words that
you find.
Word Scramble-Either you can scramble up the letters in your words or ask a partner to
quietly help you scramble them. Then, unscramble the words spelling them correctly.
Race Against a Buddy-Choose a partner to do this activity with you (it doesn’t HAVE to be
someone with the same words.) Race against your partner to see who can sort all of their
words correctly. Check your sort from the first day to make sure you are correct.
Speed Sort-Sort your words as fast as you can 3 times. Record your times in your journal.
