Sound recording and playback
Sound recording and playback had
always been one of mankind’s most
yearned dreams. But until the late 19th
century it did not come true.
The broadcast of recorded music meant a
true social revolution. It made it possible
for
the
masses to
have
access
to
something that had always been available
only through concerts or scores.
Sound recording and playback
1.1. Mechanic recording and playback
The first sound recording and playback systems were the
phonograph (by Thomas Alva Edison) and the gramophone (by
Emile Berliner).
The phonograph used
wax and tin cylinders
as recording devices.
Thomas Alva Edison
The gramophone introduced
the flat disc as a recording
device. It was made of zinc,
ebonite and slate.
Sound recording and playback
1.2. Electonic recording and playback
The introduction of electricity made the creation of the first basic
components of modern systems possible: the microphone, the
amplifier and the speaker.
The electronic system was developed for two inventions at the
same time: the record player and the tape recorder.

1.3. Digital recording and playback
The digital system samples the analog signal in order to convert its
values into binary code.
The main digital systems were the CD and the DAT.
The compact disc is recorded on just one side in the form of microscopic
dots that are read by an infrared laser.
The DAT tape is used in professional environments because it has a lot
more quality and storage capacity than the CD.
Electronic instruments
Electronic instruments produce and amplify the sound completely
electronically.
They appeared in the 1920’s and due to their great evolution, the electronic
organ, the synthesizer, the drum machine, the sequencer and the sampler
were created.

Computer music
The application of computers to music made it
possible to have a whole sound lab.
The most common music software is destined
for education, composing, writing scores and
editing sound.
Internet offers the widest and most up-to-date
information regarding all the aspects of music.
• MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface)
It is a universal system of digital communication that
makes the connection of any kind of instrument
possible.
• Musical software
There is a vast variety of music software for
different applications that is continuously getting
more integrated and related to the rest of elements.
Film music
4.1. Evolution of film music
•
Cinema has made use of music since its very beginning
as another integral element at the service of action.
•
Movies with sound began to appear in 1927 with The Jazz
Singer, using a record player synchronized with the projector.
•
Among the first great film composers, we can highlight Max
Steiner (1888 - 1971) with the soundtrack Gone with the Wind.
Lumière brothers.
Film music
4.2. Relation between music and image
a) Diegetic music: it illustrates an image
in which a sound source appears (a record
player, a dance orchestra, a performer
singing or playing an instrument, the music
from bar, etc.) and it must correspond with
it by showing the sound whatever appears
on the screen is making.
b) Non-diegetic: no sound source appears
on the screen and, therefore, the composer
is free to create the ambient music he
considers best.
Film music
4.3. The role of film music
It helps create a suitable atmosphere for the progress of the action.
It has an influence on the audience and it creates a particular
psychological effect.
It holds the story by giving a sense of continuity to the film.
Music for radio and television
Radio and television use music as a basic structural part, where it
has a leading role in all kinds of specialized programs.

5.3. Music and advertising
Music has always been used in advertising
as one of the most attractive ways of
making consumer goods known.
In both media (radio and television)
advertising uses expressive voices and the
power of music, carefully chosen according
to the product.
