BUDDHISM
ORIGINS
Buddhism was founded in the 6th century BC by
Prince Siddhartha Gautama.
He became a wandering holy man after seeing
three suffering people in one day. His goal was to
find understanding behind hardship and suffering.
Through his teachings he became known as the
Buddha, “the Enlightened One.”
BELIEFS
Four Noble Truths:
Life is full of suffering.
The cause of suffering is desire.
The cure for suffering is to overcome
desire.
The way to end desire and achieve
salvation is through the Middle Way.
BELIEFS
The Middle Way is a guide to correct
conduct. It includes ethical, or moral, rules.
Buddhist, like Hindus, believe in
reincarnation.
Dharma: Cosmic law and order; the ultimate
truth.
HOW MANY FOLLOWERS?
There are 7 million Buddhists living in India.
SIKHISM
ORIGINS
Sikhism started in the 15th century in Punjab,
India.
It blends the beliefs of Hindus and Muslims.
It is the 5th largest organized religion in the
world.
It’s holy scripture is called the Guru Granth
Sahib.
BELIEFS
God is known as the “one constant” and has
no gender.
The purpose of life is to seek out Truth and
to be reunited with it in order to have full
understand of one’s purpose in life.
Sikhs do not allow the cutting of hair.
