To help with relaxation, mental and physical
balance, and maintain a positive mood
Affron® and its benefits
Affron® is obtained from pure stigmas of saffron (Crocus sativus L.). This extract has being
used for ages as alternative medicine, both in Ayurvedic and Persian traditional medicine
systems. Saffron components have shown to have potential in the treatment of depression,
being effective in the treatment of mild-to-moderate depression. Several studies
demonstrate that this natural extract has beneficial therapeutic effects in comparison to
other pharmaceutical antidepressants.
Affron® - The way it works
Depression occurs mainly as a result of unbalanced neurotransmitters in the
brain, by balancing them, this physiological disorder can be treated and
become easier to handle for most people who suffer it. Two components of
Affron® have been proposed to be the responsible of its antidepressant
effects: Crocin and safranal inhibit reuptake of dopamine,
2
norepinephrine and serotonin , three of the four types of
neurotransmitters.
Pharmactive’s Affron® is:
100% traceable (sourced from La Mancha, Spain, Pharmactive controls all
the production steps, from cultivation to final extract)
Premium quality, complying with ISO3632:2-2010 (Official methodology for
the identification and quantification of the active compound safranal)
Active Components – crocin (color, NLT 1.5%), picrocrocin (flavor, NLT3%)
and safranal (aroma, NLT 2%)
Stable – Stability test ongoing according to ICH conditions zone 2
Non-irradiated
Well tolerated in clinical trials and doses up to 5g per day are safe.

Scientific evidence
Effectiveness treating depression and PMS
In a placebo-controlled trial in 40 patients suffering from depression, saffron (30mg/day) was found
to be significantly superior over placebo.1
In a clinical double blind study, 30 patients with mild to moderate depression were either treated with
30 mg of saffron (stigma’s extract) or with 100 mg imipramin for 6 weeks: The effects were found to
be equivalent, with a better tolerability of saffron.2
In a six week randomized, double blind pilot study efficacy of saffron extract (30 mg/day) was
compared with that of fluoxetin (Prozac) in 40 out patients with mild to moderate depression: Saffron
at this dose was found to be effective similar to fluoxetine.3
In a double-blind, randomised and placebo-controlled trial, 47 women aged 20-45 years with
diagnosed PMS received 30 mg/day of saffron or placebo for two menstrual cycles: Saffron was
clinically effective in relieving symptoms of PMS, including mood (anxiety, irritability,
depression, nervous tension, mood swings and out of control).4
Affron® - Recommended dosage
Affron® is a free flowing powder suitable for dietary supplements that
can be dosed as liquid, capsules, softgels, tablets, ….
Pharmactive recommends a daily dosage of 30 mg.
