Structured as follows: S1-552 S1-1052 S1-554 S1-1054 5kV, 5mA Diagnostic insulation tester with 2mA noise rejection 10kV, 5mA Diagnostic insulation tester with 2mA noise rejection 5kV, 5mA Diagnostic insulation tester with 4mA noise rejection 10kV, 5mA Diagnostic insulation tester with 4mA noise rejection Where does the name come from? S1 is derived from “Series 1”. The Series 1 instruments were for many years considered “the definitive insulation tester” in the market place and well known for their heavy-duty output and reliability. Hence we have used S1 prefix for the heavyduty versions. The rest? S1 - 5 5kV output 5 5mA test current 4 4mA Noise rejection S1 - 10 10kV output 5 5mA test current 4 4mA Noise rejection THIS PRODUCT IS USED FOR? This product is used for diagnostic insulation testing with DC voltage, with the additional benefit of being suitable for electrically noisy environments such as high voltage switchyards. The aim is for the customer to be able to analyse the quality of insulation within equipment such as line and substation transformers, circuit breakers, switch panels, large motor/generator windings and HV cables etc. The high 5mA test current makes this product particularly suitable for testing high capacitive loads such as long cables. WHY? Insulation is then monitored so that developing faults can be diagnosed and corrective action taken before expensive failures occur. As part of maintenance program diagnostic insulation testing can quite literally save many thousands times the cost of the tester and labour in prevented breakdown costs. However electrical interference experienced in many high voltage areas can result in poor, unreliable or unstable readings making effective diagnostic testing of the insulation impossible. In noisy 400kV plus switchyards interference currents up to 4mA are not uncommon. Currently only one competitor product quotes noise rejection, and they claim 2mA rejection. The S1-554 and S1-1054 provides the solution with a full 4mA of rejection. The 10kV option (S1-1054) is suitable to test to IEEE standards for testing motors rated greater than 12kV, with the additional benefit of future proofing the instrument against advances in insulation technology. Noise rejection. Both the MIT and existing S1-XX52 range can reject 2mA of interference current. The new instruments can reject 4mA . What is Interference (noise)? Interference is the electrical noise produced due to a variety of frequencies, which can appear on the sample being tested. It is usually due to induced currents or voltages from adjacent equipment and is very common in substations, particularly high voltage substations where power frequencies predominate. This electrical noise superimposes an AC signal on the DC test current and can cause considerable variations in readings and may prevent the operator getting a reading at all if it is beyond the capabilities of the instrument. In high noise environments high interference currents, can render most insulation testers useless. In short when selecting an insulation tester the customer must be aware of its capability to cancel out the effects of this AC noise and its suitability for the testing environment. Further more not all noise is limited to power frequencies, hence our advanced instruments utilise software filters to eliminate the effects of this noise. Megger Limited S1-554 and S1-1054 PWS / Oct 06 5 The solution? The NEW S1-554 (5kV) and S1-1054 (10kV) are the latest heavy-duty insulation testers from Megger with 5mA test current. However these instruments incorporate the very latest in noise rejection technology to eliminate unwanted effects in these high noise environments. How is it used? The instruments are equipped with the latest technology in both hardware and firmware filtering. The default setting of the instrument is with the hardware filter switched on and the firmware filter switched off. The hardware filter removes faster variations due to the effects of noise and may be switched off if desired to slightly speed up testing in quiet locations and when testing high capacitance loads. This simply removes the impedance of the filter circuit. The firmware filter averages out slow variations due to the effects of noise. The time constant of the filtering is user selectable to 10, 30 or 100 seconds to suite. This can be adjusted during the test to give the best result. FEATURES, ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS This section is split into two parts; the second section over page lists the most important key selling points. Part 1. F: A: B: Battery or mains powered. Can perform testing powered from the mains supply when battery is flat. Saves time waiting for battery to charge. F: A: B: Rugged case Less likely to damage in harsh environments Increases reliability and time lost due to unexpected repairs F A: B: Lid mounted test lead bag Leads kept and protected with instrument at all times. Less likely to loose test leads keeping the instrument ready to test. Megger Limited S1-554 and S1-1054 PWS / Oct 06 6 Part 2. KEY FEATURES, ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS S1-554 and S1-1054 Key Feature: 4mA Noise rejection Advantage: Able to take accurate readings in electrically noise environment. Benefit: Will not be affected by adjacent powered up equipment. Key Feature: High Resistance measurement range Advantage: Takes readings at high insulation values instead of infinity reading Benefit: Can trend readings for effective insulation evaluation, indicating potential failures earlier. Cannot trend infinity readings. Key feature: Advantage: Benefit: High accuracy readings Readings are reliable and repeatable, allows accurate trending of results over time Accurate diagnosis of insulation ensures correct action taken to avoid breakdown of equipment. Key Feature: High Output test current. Advantage: Less time to charge capacitance, and applies higher voltage to lower insulation levels Benefit: Saves testing time, and shows true condition of lower value insulation. S1-1054 only: Key Feature: 10kV insulation test voltage Advantage: Higher test voltage produces higher current through insulation Benefit: The ability to make higher insulation reading (35TOhm), meets IEEE requirements.
