WORD STUDY ACTIVITIES
PUT IN WORD STUDY SECTION! Always put a heading on it!

Sentence Related
1) Colorful Sentences: Write your word in a sentence. Write the lesson
word in a different way such as a different color, bubble, etc.
2) Word Art: Draw a picture for each of your lesson words, putting a
sentence below describing the picture.
3) Letter: Use all of your lesson words to write a letter to someone.
4) Parts of Speech: Find 10+ words in your in-class text or independent
reading book that relate to the part of speech of your words.
5) Antonyms/Synonyms: Write antonyms and synonyms for your words.
6) Word Sort: Sort your words by part of speech OR sort your words in
another way
7) Story: Write a story using the words.
8) Cartoon: Create a cartoon that has at least 4 boxes. Write a caption
under each image that includes a word.
9) Conversation Time: Write a conversation between two people that uses
at least five of your words.
Spelling Related
1) Word Pyramid: Use your lesson words to make word pyramids. (Write one
letter, the next line write two, the next line write three, etc.)
2) Word Search: Create a word search with your words.
3) Scramble: Scramble your words up. Have someone unscramble them.
4) Word Hunt: Find 10+ words from your independent reading book or the inclass text that relate to the spelling of your words (you could use the
prefix/suffixes/roots)
5) ABC Order: Write the words in ABC order OR reverse ABC order.

Definition/Sentence Related
1) Crossword Puzzle: Create a crossword puzzle with your lesson words.
2) Word Hunt: Find 10+ words from your independent reading book or inclass text that relate to the definition of your words.
3) Poem: Write a poem using your spelling words
4) Connection: Connect at least 5 of your words together. These connections
might be related by the words themselves, the definitions, or a context you might use
them. Use the following sentence to fill in the blanks for all 5 words.

Example:
Magnificent is connected to submarine because traveling on a submarine, you might find magnificent
ocean views.
Submarine is connected to cautious because it is important to be cautious on a submarine, otherwise you
might drown or get hurt.
Cautious is connected to careless because if you are making careless mistakes, you are not being very
cautious.
Careless is connected to spotless because each have the suffix of less, meaning without.
Spotless is related to tidy because if your room is spotless, it is neat and tidy.
5) Song: Create a song that uses your words.
6) Connection Take 2: Write down each of your words. Next to each word
share any memories, experiences, objects, events, things/people in the world
that comes to mind when you think of that word.
7) Journeys Sentences: Go through the Journeys textbook to copy down the
sentences in the story using each of the vocabulary words.
