I first conceived of writing a self-help astrology text in the spring of 1978. That summer, I wa able to get the book off its feet, thanks to Kay David who served as my editor and to Dean Price whos Gemini skill with words enabled me to formulate many of the keyword tables that later appeared Astrology For Yourself. Two years later, I was assisted by Sheila Seitz who donated her editorial feedback and by th encouragement of my friends Stuart Warren and Robert Wheeler. At this point, the book wa completed, titled Beyond Sun Signs, but no publisher could be found. The manuscript would have remained unpublished had it not been for my indispensab collaborator, Demetra George, who in October of 1985 suggested the idea of writing an astrologic workbook. At that point, I realized that Beyond Sun Signs could be rewritten in a workbook forma and hence it metamorphosed into Astrology For Yourself. During the next six hectic months, our progress was aided by the editorial feedback of Nanc Avery, Carolyn Quigley, Jim Markham, and my wife Joan. My work supervisor Brian Bergero provided me with the flexibility to balance a demanding writing schedule with a full time job. Finally, my heartfelt thanks go to my parents. They provided a nurturing environment that enable me to initiate my writing career. But more important, their ongoing support of my decision to embar upon a road less traveled has enabled me to remain true to myself. For allowing me to pursue my ow path of self discovery, I will always be grateful. Douglas Bloc August 12, 198 Portland, Orego Astrology For Yourself is the culmination of twelve years of teaching the astrological languag During that time I experimented with a variety of graphic forms to assist students in realizing ho astrological principles expressed themselves in their personal lives. To all these students I give speci thanks for their efforts and feedback in refining the workbook format. In September of 1985, as I was preparing some new handouts for a beginning astrology class, th concept for this workbook suddenly arrived—literally pouring out of my head. For this inspiration want to thank Mary Greer for allowing us to take off on Tarot For Your Self Jonathan Saturnen an Dennis Conroy both provided valuable input in clarifying the exercises. Without Douglas the creation of Astrology For Yourself would not have been possible. His har work, helpful insights and expertise in giving form to our fanciful ideas was essential for th completion of this work. I also want to extend appreciation to Philip Russell for providing the graphics in the original sel published edition of Astrology for Yourself as well as his help in teaching me about the Macintos computer. To my children, Daniel and Reina Frankfort, I offer a mother’s gratitude for their patienc and understanding during the long hours of writing. Both Douglas and I give special thanks to our editor Randy Fingland who guided this project alon the many steps to its completion. Finally I give gratitude to the Wisdom Dakinis and the Lady Yeshe Tsogyel for glimpses of th clear light. May this offering of Astrology For Yourself benefit all beings. Demetra Georg August 12, 198 Waldport, Orego Introduction Getting Started Edmund Hailey: Why do you believe in Astrology? Sir Isaac Newton: I have studied the subject, Mr. Hailey. You have not! SAAC NEWTON was no slouch. Many consider him to be endowed with the most brilliant an profound mind ever visited upon a mortal. Yet, despite the incredulity of Halley (the comet man and his colleagues, Newton actually believed in astrology. So did Benjamin Franklin. And Galile And Carl Jung. And a host of other historical luminaries. Clearly, there might be something more t this ancient art than the overgeneralized horoscope columns that appear in the daily papers. But how can one find out for sure if astrology does work? Is it, in the words of one astrologer, “th most accurate and comprehensive means of understanding human personality, behavior change, an growth?” Or is it merely a parlor game? The answer, it seems, may be easily determined if one take Sir Isaac’s advice to heart—study the subject! Which is why we have written Astrology For Yourself. Astrology for Yourself is designed to introduce you to the language/art/science of astrology b walking you through a simple, easy to learn, step-by-step procedure for interpreting your own bir chart. The vehicle for this process is a series of self-directed programmed-learning exercises that wi literally enable you to write your own chart interpretation. I Is Astrology For Yourself For Me? Before you begin this book, you definitely want to determine if it was written with you in mind. Th answer to this question is a resounding yes! if you fall into any of the following categories: 1. You have just obtained a copy of your natal chart for the first time, and would like to learn ho to interpret it. 2. Perhaps you have just had your chart interpreted by an astrologer and would like to pursue th process of self-discovery on your own. 3. You are a beginning student who would like to learn about astrology, but don’t have the time t take a class. 4. You are at the intermediate level and have studied your chart a little (either had it interpreted o have taken a beginning class), but would like to understand it in more depth. 5. You are a counseling astrologer who interprets charts for your clients and would like to have good introductory book to recommend to them. 6. You are an astrologer who teaches classes and needs a standard textbook to use with you students, one that invites them to participate in the learning process. 7. You are a professional astrologer who simply wants to review the fundamentals of your ow birth chart. As an example, while proofing the text, we (the authors) discovered a host of new insigh about our own birth charts, even though we had been studying them for more than a decade! If you can identify with any of the above descriptions, then Astrology For Yourself was written fo you. What Do I Need to Get Started? In order to pursue Astrology For Yourself beyond Chapter One, you will need a personal copy of you natal birth chart, preferably one that contains the positions of the four major asteroids and also lis your planetary aspects. If you already have such a chart, then you can use it. If you don’t have your complete birth char then you will have to send away for it or have an astrologer in your area construct one for you, or yo can order an Astrology For Yourself computer report. The address and orderform are located Appendix D at the back of the book. If you order your birth chart now, you can obtain it within five seven days, not long at all. In the meantime, you can complete Chapter One, and while you are waiting for your chart arrive, to avoid constantly having to turn to the back of the book, you may photocopy Appendices and B and place them in a separate folder kept next to Astrology For Yourself. In this way you ca more easily look up the keywords as you complete the exercises. You may elect to follow thi procedure if you find it more convenient. When you are ready, turn to Chapter One where you will be introduced to an astrological frien you have no doubt met—your Sun sign. N I Chapter 1 Introducing the Zodiac Astrology as a Language of Energy STROLOGY is a language, art, and science that studies the relationship between the cycles o celestial bodies and the affairs of people on earth. Derived from the Greek roots astron (sta and logos (word or speech), astrology literally means “star talk.” The purpose of learnin astrology is to better know and understand ourselves and our place in the cosmos. In the followin pages, we are going to take you on a journey of self-discovery that only astrology can provide. If someone were to ask you to describe astrology, you would most likely think of the twelve sign of the Zodiac, popularly known as the “Sun signs.” They are listed in Table 1 along with their symbo and corresponding dates. Beside this table, Figure 1 displays the zodiacal signs arranged in the traditional circle format (“Zodiac” is Greek for “circle of animals”). On an energy level, the signs represent the twelve primary energy fields, the formative principle of the universe, or the archetypal patterns. On a psychological level, the signs correspond to twelv basic personality types; and even more specifically, to the twelve basic psychological needs that eac and every human being experiences. Table 2 gives a brief overview of these personality traits. Although everyone has all twelve of these signs somewhere in their chart, each person was bor under a specific “Sun sign.” In the following exercise, you will learn to determine your own Sun sign A Table 1: The Signs of the Zodiac Symbol Sign Aries, the Ram Taurus, the Bull Gemini, the Twins Cancer, the Crab Leo, the Lion Virgo, the Virgin Libra, the Scales Scorpio, the Scorpion Sagittarius, the Centaur Capricorn, the Goat Aquarius, the Water Bearer Approximate Dates* March 21-April 20 April 21-May 20 May 21-June 20 June 21-July 21 July 22-August 22 August 23-September 22 September 23-October 22 October 23-November 21 November 22-December 20 December 21-January 20 January 21-February 18 Pisces, the Fish February 19-March 20 *If you were born on one of the transition dates (known as the cusp), then have a professional astrologer or a birth chart computing service determine your correct sun sign.
