Astrology as a Mapping Technique for SelfOrganizing Systems
Kepler Conference 2017
openabm.org
The subject matter of astrology according to Ptolemy
Universal (natural/mundane) astrology countries and cities, periodic events such as
wars, plagues, famines, earthquakes, floods,
storms, heat, winds and weather that affects
agriculture.
= collectives and their disturbances, the
weather and climate systems.
Genethliological (judicial) astrology – the
person (psychological/medical), interrogative
(horary) and electional astrology.
= the body, mind and personality, the relations
between the person and the networks it is
nested within.

Reductionism vs System Science

Systems Theory Summarized
The shifting of scientific focus from
the parts to the whole.
The shifting of focus between systems
levels - holons. A holarchy is where a
holon is both a part and a whole.
The focus is on patterns, networks, connections and relationships,
not on parts and objects.
Components interact and self-organize – the whole is more than the
sum of the parts.
Properties at each level of self-organization are called “emergent.”
History of Systems Theory
Alexander Bogdanov (18731928 “tektology” – the science
of organized structures.
Ludwig von Bertalanffy (19011972) –life as a system of selforganization – general systems
theory
Norbert Weiner (1894-1964) father of cybernetics –the
Macy Conferences (1946-1953)
– included scientists from the
humanities including Gregory
Bateson and Margaret Mead.

The Cosmic Environment at the Next System Level
http://www.science-art.com/
Some fundamental
assumptions the field of
astrology should consider:
1. Self-regulating systems are found
in nature. These include living
physical and emergent mental
systems, organizations and social
systems, local and global
ecosystems. These are the
subject matter of astrology.
2. There exists a concerted scientific
effort to understand systems. It has
a history, a set of definitions,
theories, and a vocabulary.
3. Systems, from bodies to collectives,
evolve. Evolution is change over
time and takes place at the
system/environment interface.

4. The physical environment is
perceived as stable in the very
short term, but it changes at
varying rates. Systems react to
the environment in ways that
improve survival – they evolve.
5. A second kind of environment
is the geocosmic environment
which is composed of mostly
consistent cycle repetitions
transmitted via light, magnetism
and gravity.
6. Life has evolved to utilize both
environments.

Updating Astrology:
Defining astrology as a means of describing and making
predictions about the behavior of self-organizing systems from the top down.
Joining the multi-disciplinary scientific community wherever
possible as it develops a revolutionary approach to the study
of nature.
Utilizing existing terminology and concepts from system
science – not “reinventing the wheel.”
Rejecting or sidelining traditional astrological terminology
(in regard to research at least) that can be replaced with
more exacting terms from general system science.
Rejecting or sidelining assumptions and concepts not
based on evidence and discriminating between facts and
beliefs.
Creating overarching models in the context of systems
science that will likely cause a reorganization of the subject
matter of astrology.
Using models based on systems science to shape
hypotheses and direct research.
