What Is Epidemiology?
• The branch of
medicine dealing with
the incidence and
prevalence of disease
in large populations
and with detection of
the source and cause
of epidemics of
infectious disease.
AIDS In The United States
• AIDS was first identified
in the USA in 1981. The
epidemic has now spread
to every part of the USA
and to all sectors of
society.
• It is thought that more
than one million people
are living with HIV in the
USA and that more than
half a million have died
after developing AIDS.
AIDS Cases By Ethnicity
• At the end of 2005, the CDC estimates that 437,982 people
were living with AIDS in the USA. The chart below shows
the ethnicities of these people, revealing that African
Americans have been disproportionately affected.
