Plant Adaptations
Structural or
Behavioral?
Color
The state flower of Texas
is the bluebonnet.
Is the color of this flower
a structural adaptation
or a behavioral
adaptation?
Structural
Storing Water
• Cacti store water in
their stems.
• Is storing water a
structural adaptation
or a behavioral
adaptation?
Behavioral
Cones or Spores
• Conifers are trees that produce cones to
protect their seeds.
• Are cones or spores a structural adaptation
or a behavioral adaptation?
Structural
Needles
• Cactus needles are
modified leaves that
both: prevent water loss
due to plant transpiration
by having a smaller area
than regular leaves, and
protect the plants from
their predators.
• Are needles a structural
adaptation or a
behavioral adaptation?
Structural
Response to Light
• The seeds of plants
contain mechanisms
which ensure that the
shoots grow upwards
towards the light.
• Is growing towards the
light a structural
adaptation or a
behavioral adaptation?
Behavioral
Seed Dispersal
• Plants need to disperse their
seeds away from themselves
to reproduce and to stop
overcrowding.
• Is seed dispersal a structural
adaptation or a behavioral
adaptation?

Shape of Roots
• There are many different types of specialized roots
which have evolved in both trees and plants.
• Is the shape of a plant’s roots a structural
adaptation or a behavioral adaptation?
Shape of Leaves
• Plants have different shaped leaves to live in
different environments. For example, cacti have
lots of long, thin, needle-like leaves to reduce
the loss of water in their habitats as it is
extremely dry. Whereas, plants in wet countries
have broader leaves to increase the amount of
light energy captured.
• Is the shape of a plant’s leaves a structural
adaptation or a behavioral adaptation?
Photosynthesis
• Photosynthesis is the
process by which plants
use carbon dioxide,
sunlight, and water to
produce their own food.
• Is photosynthesis a
structural adaptation or a
behavioral adaptation?
Bark
• Bark is the outermost layers of
stems and roots. The primary
function of bark is to protect the
plant from the outside world.
• Is a plant’s bark a structural
adaptation or a behavioral
adaptation?
