1st GRADE MUSIC—NC LESSON PLANS From: (W) Oct 2 - (M) Oct 7, 2013 Unit/Objective: “What are pitch and scale?” Standards Incorporated/Bloom’s: Rhythm; Melody; Singing alone and with others; Music Literacy; Form CORE Integrations: SS: Citizenship; LA: Aural Language, Diction, Reading; Phys: Gross Motor Skills; Math: Patterns, Reading a graph; Science: Anatomy (Posture affects singing technique) Materials/Elements: Class List; Seating Chart; White Board; Rubric for singing assessment; CD for “Miss Mary Mack” and “All Around the Corn Sally”. Essential Question: “What are pitch and scale?” Set/Introduction: Greet students in line in the hallway; Lead them in to assigned places Introduce ESSENTIAL QUESTION and recite CLASSROOM RULES Activity/Lesson: Review “Ebeneezer Sneezer” by question/answer about our terms PITCH and SCALE. Listening to the song “Miss Mary Mack” students will listen for pattern/form in the song by listening for the sequence of events/details in the story. After learning the story and hand clap pattern, the students will be familiar enough with the song to sing along and perform the hand clap (individually/not with partners yet). While singing the song, students will listen for the pitch pattern (up, down, same pitch) in the song. After singing, the students will show what they heard one sound at a time by pointing up, down, or using a level hand to show same pitch as we map out the direction of the melody on the board. We will sing with motions a third time and students will show the pitch pattern with the hand clap pattern (follows the same pattern as the pitch chart we will have made together). This reinforces good aural pitch identification. We will follow a similar pattern for the song, “All Around The Corn Sally” and play the music game that goes with it after listening, practicing, writing the form pattern and pitch pattern. In this song, students will listen for form pattern in the directions given that are different for each verse. Students will listen for (and sing) the recurring chorus response “All around the corn Sally”. This will be the part of the song we will use to chart/identify the pitch pattern visually on the board. Review/Closure: Review the terms PITCH and SCALE. Review the lines charted from the chorus of each new song learned showing the pitch patterns with our hands. ASSESSMENT: Is visual/aural observation of students following directions, repeating correct pitches and words in the song, performing the correct motions in time as an individual/group, etc. Reflection Notes:
