How Does Total Cancer Care Work?
Everything about us starts with our DNA, which
is in the genes that we inherit from our parents.
Genes make up who we are. Cancer can happen
when there are problems with these genes.
With recent advancements in technology, we can
now test each tumor for approximately 30,000
genes. These genes provide a “molecular
fingerprint” that is unique for each person’s
tumor, just like the lines on our fingertips
uniquely identify each one of us. By studying
that “molecular fingerprint”, scientists may
eventually develop new drug therapies that are
personalized to the individual patient.
Total Cancer Care is the future of
personalized medicine.
Treating cancer one patient at a
time
Did you know that just as every individual has a
unique fingerprint, every cancer tumor is unique
as well? And while we know that cancer can be
classified by its site of origin (lung, breast, colon,
prostate), there are, in fact, many different types
of each of these cancers.
Currently we treat most cancer patients with a
standard treatment – but some patients may not
benefit from the same type of treatment. We now
know that individual patients that have the same
“kind of cancer” do not always respond to the
same type of treatment. Each tumor is unique
and Total Cancer Care hopes to lead us to
personalized medicine by finding the right
treatment for the right patient, creating a new
frontier in cancer research.
You can now be a part of this research project,
which will occur across the entire state of Florida
and beyond.
The study will involve asking thousands of
patients like you to participate and allow us to:
• Study the extra cancer tissue that is removed
during surgery that would normally be
discarded
• Use a small portion of any biopsy tissue that
is removed, for research
• Gather information about your cancer care
• Request that you complete a brief survey
• Follow you for life on the Program
Why should I participate in Total
Cancer Care?
•
In the future, we may be able to use genebased technology to try to find the best drug
for you
•
If a new clinical trial or new drug is
developed that we think may benefit you, we
will contact you with the information
•
You may also help others with cancer by
participating in this research. It takes
thousands of individual participants like you
to make Total Cancer Care a success
