Intro to Electricity
What IS Electricity?
A form of energy resulting from the
existence of charged particles
How do we harness this
ENERGY?
Conductor
• Something that allows electricity to flow
• Examples;
– metal
– Water
– air
Insulator
• something that does NOT let electricity flow
• Examples
– Glass
– Plastic
– Rubber
– Porcelain
Power Source
• Something that supplies
electricity
• Examples;
– Battery
– Generator
– solar panel
Battery
• Portable power
source that has a
positive and
negative. The
negative has extra
electrons. They
want to move to the
positive side
Circuit
• path for electricity to flow
Load
• Something that uses electricity
• Example
– Toaster
– Ipod
– Dvd player
Short Circuit
• unwanted contact of wires or parts in a circuit
resulting in damage or malfunction of the
circuit
– Example: two bare wires touching
Voltage, Resistance & Current
Voltage (V)
• The “push” of electricity in a circuit
• Measured in VOLTS (V)
Resistance (R)
• The resistance to flow of electricity
• Measured in OHMS (Ω)
Current (I)
• The rate of flow of electricity in a circuit
• Measured in AMPHERES (A)
