Biliary fever – what is this disease ?
• Disease of dogs and cats caused by
a parasite that affects the red blood
cells
• The parasite damages the red blood
cell causing anaemia (blood loss)
• Similar to malaria in people

• Parasite is Babesia canis or Babesia
felis
• Parasite transmitted by ticks
• Disease is more prevalent in the
summer months

that may have ticks
• The routinely given 3:1 or 5:1 vaccine
does not prevent this disease
• A specific vaccine is available (Piro®)
that can protect a dog against biliary
fever
