MAHS Lesson Plan Overview Teacher: Kitchens, Chad/Richards, Nicole Course: World History Timeframe: Week of September 2 Unit Topic: Classical Mediterranean Societies Lesson Concept: Cultures of Mountains and Sea, Warring City-States, Democracy and Greece’s Golden Age, Alexander’s Empire, Spread of Hellenistic Culture CCGPS Addressed: ● SSWH3 The student will examine the political, philosophical, and cultural interaction of Classical Mediterranean societies from 700 BCE to 400 CE. Essential Question: What impact did the cultures of classical Greece have on the modern world? Background Knowledge: ● Chapter 1-Human Origins, Chapter 2-Ancient Civilizations, Chapter 3-People and Ideas, Chapter 4-First Age of Empires Key Vocabulary: ● Trojan War, Homer, polis, democracy, classical art, Aristotle, Alexander the Great, Hellenistic Learning Plan: Students Will: ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● a. Compare the origins and structure of the Greek polis, the Roman Republic, and the Roman Empire. b. Identify the ideas and impact of important individuals; include Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle and describe the diffusion of Greek culture by Aristotle’s pupil Alexander the Great and the impact of Julius and Augustus Caesar. c. Analyze the contributions of Hellenistic and Roman culture; include law, gender, and science. d. Describe polytheism in the Greek and Roman world and the origins and diffusion of Christianity in the Roman world. e. Analyze the factors that led to the collapse of the Western Roman Empire. Those that have mastered the standard can go on to more advanced activities. Those students that are still emerging in terms of mastery can use the review activities.
