1. JOB IDENTIFICATION
Job Title:
Clinical Nurse Specialist (Breast Cancer)
Department:
Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist Team, Acute Sector, NHS Grampian
Hours:
37.5 hours per week
Band / Salary:
Band 7 - £31,072 - £40,964 per annum
2. JOB PURPOSE
 To function as a lead member of the multi-disciplinary team by co-ordinating and providing a high
quality and effective specialist nursing service for patients with Breast Cancer throughout the
course of their illness integrating both acute and palliative care.
 To provide professional and clinical leadership in the speciality of Breast Cancer across NHS
Grampian and act as a resource of clinical expertise for nursing and medical colleagues. The
individual is expected to motivate staff to provide high standards of care by acting as a role
model.
 To be responsible for providing specialist education and training programmes for health care
professionals.
 To ensure practice is clinically effective and informed in accordance with the NMC Code of
Professional Conduct. To implement and undertake research and audit activities to ensure
evidence based practice in the specialist area.
 To provide support for patients attending consultant led clinics.
 To develop and undertake independent nurse led clinics.
3. ORGANISATIONAL POSITION
Can be made available if required.
4. SCOPE AND RANGE
The postholder has responsibility for the provision of care for Breast Cancer patients in NHS Grampian
including Moray. In addition, provision of care is required for a small number of patients from NHS
Orkney and NHS Shetland.
The postholder has direct responsibility for developing and implementing nurse led services and
clinics within the overall service provision for patients with Breast Cancer, including follow up,
surveillance and disease recurrence.
5. MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Advanced Nursing Practice












Improves the process of care for patients with Breast Cancer throughout their pathway
Applies specialist knowledge, competencies and clinical decision making skills to enhance patient
care
Assesses, diagnoses and manages complex problems within agreed protocols
Leads and acts as a specialist resource in Breast Cancer nursing by promoting the service and
increasing the awareness of the Breast Cancer in both acute and community settings to enhance
standards of care
Responsible for ensuring that the quality of care is reviewed, assessed, implemented and
monitored to maintain standards of care
Enables patients to take responsibility for their health and well-being by practicing in an open,
transparent and inclusive manner thereby ensuring patients have the relevant information to
participate in decisions about their care
Develop nurse led clinics for follow up of Breast Cancer post treatment, systemic chemotherapy,
endocrine therapy and radiotherapy
Follow up patients who have symptoms that may require further investigation
Assess for chemotherapy, radiotherapy and endocrine therapy toxicities, including surveillance
for disease recurrence
Providing patient and clinician support in Breast oncology clinics
Ongoing oral therapies for Breast Cancer
Point of contact for breast patients admitted to hospital, e.g. oncology patients in Acute
Medicine, and advise on immediate management
Leadership and Management




Acts as an exemplary professional role model for leading Breast Cancer nursing services
Takes a lead role in the development and implementation of guidelines and protocols for Breast
Cancer care to promote consistency in the delivery of evidence based practice
Provides nursing expertise to advise on reviewing and enhancing Breast Cancer nursing
services, where concerns exist about quality
Plans, directs and develops, in conjunction with others, future services for patients with Breast
Cancer
Education



Leads on the assessment of training and education needs relating to the care of patients with
Breast Cancer and facilitates the development of educational provision to ensure that nurses are
professionally competent to deliver care
Develop, deliver and contribute to multi-disciplinary education and training programmes to
promote a wider understanding of Breast Cancer in both acute and community settings
Teach, advise and coach patients and carers about the condition, treatment options and
management of symptoms and treatment side effects
Research, Audit and Elevation






Leads clinical audit of Breast Cancer nursing services to inform practice and service
development
Undertakes audit of patient outcomes and toxicities
Acts as a clinical collaborator for research programmes, which leads to continuous improvements
in care
Critically analyses the relevance of appropriate research related to practice and encourages
dissemination and utilisation at a local level
Evaluates the effectiveness of role in relation to patient outcomes, service needs and professional
requirements
In collaboration with colleagues, implement actions arising from NHS Healthcare Improvement

DECISIONS AND JUDGEMENTS



The post holder is expected to make clinical and professional autonomous decisions on a daily
basis, including the provision of advice to the multi-disciplinary team
Clinical decision making with regard to patients' care, through monitoring of patients' condition and
acting on clinical judgements
Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates individual patient needs and provides practical,
informational and emotional support, and symptom control for patients and their carers at all
stages of the Breast Cancer pathway from treatment, to palliative care, end of life care and into
bereavement.
