TENSES BY: ADITYA KUMAR PATHAK THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF TENSES 1) SIMPLE TENSE 2) CONTINUOUS TENSE 3) PERFECT TENSE READ THE FOLLOWING SENTENSES 1) ANITA IS HERE TODAY. 2) MY MOTHER IS UNWELL. 3) ANITA WAS HERE YESTARDAY 4) MY MOTHER WAS UNWELL. 5) ANITA WILL COME HERE TOMORROW. 6) MY MOTHER WILL GO TO THE HOSPITAL. 1) The verb ‘is’ in the first two sentences shows the present time. They are said to be in the Present Tense. 2) The verb ‘was’ in the next two sentences shows the time that has gone by/past time. They are said to be in the Past Tense. 3) The verb ‘will’ in the last two sentences shows the time that will come/future time. They are said to be in the Future Tense. SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE Cow like grass The sun sets in the west. All the colored words are verbs. These verbs are in the Simple Present Tense. In the Simple Present Tense, the first form of the verb is used. In some cases, ‘-s’ or ‘-es’ is added. REMEMBER I, we, you, they and all plural subjects = First form of the verb. He, she, it and all singular subjects = First form of the verb + ‘-s’ or ‘-es’. SIMPLE PAST TENSE Anil and Ramesh went to the market Rahul ate an ice-cream The verbs in these sentences are in the Simple Past Tense which show that the action has taken place sometime back. In the Simple Past Tense, the past tense form of the verbs is used ; like – went, bought, ate, liked, wanted, e.t.c. REMEMBER 1) While asking questions, we put ‘did’ before a subject and use the first form of the verb. E.g. Why did Rahul not eat a ice-cream ? 2) In the negative sentences, we use ‘did not’ + first form of the verbs, e.g., ‘did not buy’/ ‘did not eat’. E.g. Anish and Ramesh did not go to the market. Rahul did not eat an ice-cream. SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE Read these sentences : Present Tense Shanu works = Tina does her = homework today The plane takes = Future Tense Shanu will work. Tina will do her homework today. The plane will off. THE VERB ‘WILL BE’ OR ‘WILL’ DENOTE, AN ACTION IS TO BE DONE IN THE FUTURE. SUCH A VERB IS SAID TO BE IN SIMPLE FUTURE TENSE. PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE Harsh is cutting the cake. The monkeys are jumping. All the colored words are verbs in the Present Continuous Tense as they denote an action that is going on or continuing. REMEMBER 1. In the Present Continuous Tense, we use : ‘is’/’am’/’are’ + first form of the verb + ‘-ing’. 2. We use Present Continuous Tense to tell what is happening now. PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE Mr. Basu was running Sudeep was studying when after the bus his friends came. The verbs was running, was studying denote actions that were going on or continuing some time in the past. Such verbs was said to be in the Present Continuous Tense. REMEMBER In the Past Continuous Tense we use: ‘was’/’were’ + first form of the verb + ‘-ing’. THANKYOU
